Dear Friends of the Homer Library,
What does a library look like, if the doors must remain closed? All over people are re-envisioning what life looks like during a pandemic, and your local library has been doing the same. I’ve been privileged to sit in on a few Zoom meetings with library staff, and I am awed by their commitment during this disrupted period. With creativity, integrity, and allegiance to the democratic values of the library, they are developing ideas and programs to meet the needs of our community during this unprecedented moment in time.
Youth Services Librarian Claudia Haines will begin doing Storytime live, on-air next week at KBBI. We invite you to tune in Thursday, April 2, 10:00 am. We are also experimenting with making Knitting Club available with the same Zoom platform that staff are conducting meetings with. Knitting Club has long been a place where meaningful connections are formed, so it seems a natural place to begin. We'll let you know when we have our first scheduled meeting. Staff are also re-imagining the Summer Reading and Learning Program, Summer@HPL. In the meantime, we’re expediting the Storywalk so families can practice social distancing, while enjoying a good walk and book.
But what about the other books? Staff are working tirelessly to bolster the digital collection. I encourage you to familiarize yourself with the Alaska Digital Library, if you haven’t already. Staff can help you troubleshoot any challenges you might have. You can call 235-3180 or email circ@ci.homer.ak.us for help.
So what does the library look like when the doors are closed? Please enjoy the pictures that follow of staff continuing their important library work.
Wishing all of our Friends good health.
Take Care,
Mercedes Harness
FHL Coordinator
