GMUFA ELECTION 2020

The MacEwan University Sessional Steering Collaborative (MUSSC) is endorsing and campaigning for the two Sessional Faculty members in the current GMUFA election for the positions of Vice President and School of Business Representative, due to their many years of employment and service at MacEwan University and, most especially, their truly noteworthy contributions to the well-being of faculty of all designations at MacEwan.

These two candidates—while acknowledging the diversity among the different faculties and departments, and the differences between Tenured Faculty and Sessional Faculty—are fully committed to cultivating a solidarity (rather than a segregationist) ethos for the GMUFA. MUSSC firmly believes that this solidarity is necessary for the efficacy of the GMUFA as it embraces its status as a union in the face of the draconian cuts to post-secondary institutions in Alberta.

Voting is from Wednesday, April 2, to Thursday, April 9!

Shannon Robertson is running for the position of GMUFA Vice President. Shannon graduated from the University of Alberta in 2005, and began teaching for MacEwan’s English Department that same year. She delivers courses in literature, academic writing, and business writing, and regularly presents to MacEwan’s nursing students on the importance of bedside communication and the family voice in the healing journey of pediatric patients. She currently serves on the GMUFA Board as a Sessional Representative, and on the Faculty Association Negotiating Committee (FANC), which is hard at work on the terms of the next Collective Agreement. This experience positions her well to serve as GMUFA Vice President, a role in which she will continue to advocate for all members of the GMUFA, and to provide continuity on the GMUFA Executive during this especially challenging time. Shannon is also a member of MUSSC. She emails the MUSSC bulletins to Sessional Faculty, and thus is an important contact person for the Sessional Faculty who have questions or who want to provide information or give feedback.

Jacqueline Devlin is running for the position of GMUFA School of Business Representative. She received her law degree from the University of Calgary in 1992, was admitted to the Law Society in 1993, and continues to be an active member (pro bono) of the bar. Since 1999, she has been an instructor in the Paralegal Studies Program, in MacEwan’s School of Business. She has a keen interest in and teaches Employment law. As well, she has experience in mediation, negotiation, and board work, and has been the President and Chair of two non-profit organizations. She has also been central to the range of gains made for Sessional Faculty at MacEwan University over the last several years. For example, she composed and lobbied for the two resolutions passed in October 2017 by the GMUFA membership—one which reinstated year-round GMUFA membership for Sessional Faculty and one which opened up all positions on the GMUFA Board to Sessional Faculty. Further, as a Sessional Representative on the GMUFA for the last three years, Jacqueline has drawn on her vast knowledge of employment law to facilitate the GMUFA’s shift to its new status as a union, and, in doing so, has represented all GMUFA members’ issues on the GMUFA Board with distinction.
