In difficult times, trustworthy news and information is more important than ever and we are so honoured to see our readers turn toward us during this turbulent moment in history.
Our small team is working around the clock to bring you news and analysis focused on the relationship between COVID-19 and the natural world — be it delayed industrial projects, crowded work camps or the oil and gas industry bailout — while also continuing on with our longer-term investigations.
All of this work is made possible because of you, our generous donors.
In just the first three months of 2020, nearly a million people have read The Narwhal — more than double the number of people who visited our website during the same period last year.
Your support made it possible for us to have a photographer on the ground in Wet’suwet’en territory for over a month, while most large news outlets had no one present to cover the arrests of Wet’suwet’en matriarchs.
Your support meant we had the resources to stand up to the RCMP and successfully fight for the rights of journalists to report from within injunction zones, during a time when our photographer was at risk of arrest just for doing her job.
Your support means we’ve been able to hire not just one, but two new editors this spring, just in time for our two new reporters in the Yukon and northwestern B.C. to start next week.
When we launched The Narwhal less than two years ago, this is exactly what we dreamt of happening, but never did we expect our dreams to come to fruition so quickly. We have you to thank for all of it.
