Friends,

The sun is shining, flowers are blooming, and birds are singing. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, we are reminded of the poet Robert Frost’s words: “In three words I can sum up everything I’ve learned about life: It goes on.”

Our Achieve Atlanta Scholars certainly exemplify this, as they have persevered through disruption and uncertainty, with many starting college classes online this week. We have been inspired by how hard they are working to continue their educations.

Scholars shared with us their successes—families who are supporting them, employers who are continuing to pay modest but necessary wages, and professors and advisers who are reaching out for support.

Scholars also shared their pain. Having to take care of their own children while trying to study. Being forced to leave campus before they could gather essential belongings. Feeling like a burden to the families they are coming back to—not because families don’t love them, but because they are an unexpected person to feed and shelter while family members lose their own jobs.

The testimonies of fear and resilience fuel our resolve to meet immediate needs while helping students get on a sustainable path for the rest of the semester and beyond. We continue to coach, advise, and provide emergency grants to students. We are also redoubling our efforts to build a strong community and provide virtual spaces where students can connect with each other, get quick access to social services and academic advice, and hopefully get a dose of love

You can read about specific efforts below, and we’ll continue to update you on new developments.

Be well,

Tina

College Advising Corps, APS Counselors, and OneGoal are supporting high school seniors to stay on track to college, as well as providing assistance with applying for financial aid. Our partners are using various platforms to connect with students including Google Voice, Zoom, text messaging, Facebook live sessions, video classes, recorded lessons, and social media.

These partners are also working with juniors to build individualized balanced college lists using the Match and Fit List Builder. The goal is to keep juniors on track with the college search process so they are on strong footing when they come back for senior year.
Scholars continue to apply for emergency grants and to date, we have received more than 230 applications. The most common requests have been related to housing, utilities, food, and technology for online coursework. We anticipate making up to $80,000 in grants by the end of next week. In addition to providing funds, Achieve Atlanta staff are assessing grant recipients' long-term needs and connecting them to social services available in Atlanta.

Scholars and families can find Coronavirus resources and updates on our website here.
In the theme of “life goes on” we have received more than 1,000 Achieve Atlanta Scholarship applications from APS seniors, and we will continue to accept applications until May 31st. This is a tremendous signal of the hope students have for their future academic career, and we anticipate welcoming a robust class of new Scholars in the fall. Please encourage any APS seniors you know to apply for the scholarship here.

Members of our college success team are calling Scholars to assess their needs and coach them through the transition home and to online learning. This week, we made over 200 calls to students. The team is also speaking to all partner colleges to get updates on course delivery and available student services and working with our nonprofit partners to support outreach and coaching. We want to give a special shout out to Clayton State University, Oglethorpe University, Spelman College, and Georgia Tech, who have all committed to continuing work-study funding or student employment for Achieve Atlanta ambassadors! We anticipate hearing from other partner colleges soon.
