Hopkins Activity Center News & Notes

Good Day to You All,

Another week of change in our lives. Sadly, the City of Hopkins announces “The Hopkins Activity Center will not open until further notice.” Well, that’s not good news! But, that’s OK, because I know you will take it all in stride because you care about each other and you want to see everyone healthy and happy when we return for activity at the Hopkins Activity Center.

The Hopkins Activity Center staff is all working remotely now. We actually have plenty to do.As some of you may be doing spring cleaning, we are also cleaning, that is our office files. Debbie and I have taken piles of old paper files and are purging and scanning their contents. Tricia is sorting through our electronic files, and organizing their contents. See some of the fun photos she has come across featured in this email.

Staying Connected

Virtual Meet-Ups

How would you like to join me and a group of others from the Hopkins Activity Center in a “Virtual Meet-Up” since we cannot physically meet-up for activities at the Center? You will be able to actually see and speak to your friends who also join in on my “Virtual Meet-Up”. You can do it from your desktop, laptop, tablet or phone. We will use the ZOOM app. Tricia, Debbie and I have used ZOOM this week as well as members Joe H, Jim S who have helped me test it out. Are you in? If so, email me at activitycenterzoom@gmail.com and I will send you more details. Are you not that techie, but want to join in? Email me, and let’s see if I can get you to a “Virtual Meet-Up”.

Staying Safe Online

My friends at Zander Insurance recently wrote:  "During uncertain times, scammers often attempt to prey on the fear and empathy of potential victims. This pandemic leaves many particularly vulnerable, as more people are beginning to work remotely. That’s why we want to make sure you are aware of the tactics being used to access your personal information."

Scam tactics to look out for:

Malicious links- You will likely receive emails with links offering information about the Corona virus. Many people have reported receiving emails supposedly from the World Health Organization, Wall Street Journal, and other reputable sources, that are, in fact, fraudulent.

Tips: Be sure to look carefully at the sender’s email address, as well as the URL to which the link is trying to send you, before clicking anywhere within the message. Malicious links are often used to steal personal information, capture login credentials, or install malware on your device.

Fake charities - Another tactic that re-surfaces during times of crisis is fake charities. Bad actors may attempt to exploit your kind nature by asking for donations to help distribute a COVID-19 vaccine (there isn’t one) or similar cause. Be wary of these emails and do your research before opening your wallet!

Checks from the Government - Since there are reports that the United States government may begin sending money by check or direct deposit to American citizens due to the COVID-19 crisis, the Federal Trade Commission offers important tips to keep in mind:

-The government will not ask you to pay anything up front to get this money.
-The government will not call to ask for your social security, bank account, or credit card numbers. Anyone who does is not legitimate.
-Checks are not currently being sent out. Anyone who tells you they can get you the money now is using this as a tactic to get your money.
Send Us Your Thoughts

Give us a shout out about how you are doing, and what activities you are occupying your time with at activitycenter@hopkinsmn.com. I loved all the communication you sent last week. If you have a neighbor that is not connected electronically or with family/friends and they need assistance let us know. If we can serve, we will do our best to make it happen.

Are you “sheltering in place?”  Keeping safe and keeping others safe? Great, because we want to see you when we are allowed to open.

I end with this…"When you throw babies in the air, they laugh because they know you will catch them. That is trust." (Author unknown)
