 President's Message
by Adam Coolong

Greetings, my fellow Scions, and since this is March 17th as I type this—happy St. Patrick’s Day to you!

These are certainly strange times.  I obviously didn’t expect to be writing this under local quarantine; I had hoped to give you well wishes if you were traveling to Europe, or if you were going to Washington DC or Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Operation Varsity in those places.

Alas, it is not to be.  This is out of everyone’s control, and of course I implore you all to be taking all necessary precautions to ensure the health and safety of you and your families—especially our elderly veterans.

While we cannot meet together physically to commemorate what is quite simply the most important date in our shared history together, I hope we can do the next-best thing.

Our Scions Board of Directors is in communication with each other to come up with some kind of plan for an online commemoration of some description. I know this isn’t ideal, but it may very well be the only outlet open to us.

I don’t want to go into too much detail before plans have been solidified, but I do hope to be sharing some news with you soon.

If you’re not connected with us via Facebook, I recommend that you check out our page and follow us, so you can receive updates. It may very well be the best venue for communications, on March 24th.

Varsity is still in our minds and in our hearts. In your own way, I encourage you to spare a moment for quiet reflection and remembrance on March 24th, and think of our brave troopers who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

Thank you, and best wishes to you all.
Airborne! All the way!

Adam Coolong,
President

 2020 Remembrance Trip to the ETO

by Jeff Schumacher

 February Update

Hello, fellow Scions and Veterans!

As you are certainly aware by now, our 2020 Trip to the ETO scheduled for March 15 through 29 was postponed due to the current COVID-19 situation.  However, the trip planning team is already exploring calendar options for a rescheduled trip this fall.  Interest remains very strong for making this 75th Anniversary observance a reality in the 2020 anniversary year, and we are working with our European hosts and service providers daily to find a fit for the 2-week trip.  Stay tuned for updates as we are able to secure dates.  Until then, be well and stay healthy.

Airborne!

Jeff Schumacher
Although we are unsure of how the current health crisis will impact our plans for this years Annual Reunion, we encourage everyone interested to make their reservations, which can be cancelled at no charge within 48 hours if circumstances change.

Fellow Scion Patty Bowers (father Tom Miller 193/194) has found a beautiful new hotel with great rates, close to the WWII event. She has written a terrific synopsis of the WWII event plus areas additional offerings which we're sure you will enjoy reviewing (for example Gettysburg, Lancaster, Philadelphia, Reading Outlets). Take advantage and bring and share all information you have on your 17th Airborne Dad, Uncle, Brother, Grandfather, Friend. This is a perfect opportunity to strengthen the memory of them. Since this WWII event is so well run and people attend from all over the country, it is IMPORTANT that you call and reserve your room as they will fill up fast!

We will have our beautiful 17th Airborne Memorial Service on Saturday. Also we will hold our annual Scion meeting to include voting for officers. We need you to make it happen! We always appreciate any input or ideas you may have to make this reunion a big success. Please don't delay!

P.S. Before I end this letter to you: my Dad, Bill Smith 466th HQ, was President 1989-90 and hosted three of the large reunions; two in Valley Forge (1989 & 2005) and one in Mt. Airy Poconos (1988). He loved corresponding to the 17th Vets and their families and what you just read is one of the letters he had in the Thunder from Heaven for the Valley Forge Reunion. I just updated for ours this year to bring a smile to all our faces!

Sincerely,
Michele A. Smith

NARRATIVE
The Troop Carrier Squadron was the 95th, 440th Troop Carrier Group. Their H hour was 08:30 AM leaving from Orleans/Bricy, France.  Their landing zone was LZ-N near Hamminkelin, Germany.  They were over target at 1200 hours.

According to Officer Taylor:
“TAKE OFF WAS PERFECT…HAD FIGHTERS OVER US ALL THE WAY…IT SEEMED AS THOUGH THE ENEMY HAD THE LZ WHEN I LANDED AND WE WERE PINNED DOWN FOR SOME TIME… THE ENEMY WAS RAISING HELL WITH SMALL ARMS FIRE AND MORTARS…QUITE A FEW OF THE GLIDER WERE HIT WITH MORTAR FIRE AND SMALL ARMS FIRE…AFTER WE LANDED I STAYED WITH THE AIRBORNE FOR ABOUT SIX HOURS…THEN WENT TO THE ASSEMBLY POINT…THE NEXT MORNING I HEADED FOR THE RHINE….WE TOOK A LOT OF PRISONERS ALONG WITH US TO A STOCKADE ALONG THE RHINE. “
Additional information given by Officer Taylor was to have fighters go in and neutralize all farm buildings within the LZ and DZ Zones. Would have liked to have had more training with loaded glider. Should have M-1…Carbine is no good. Taylor’s report gave coordinates as 209 - 464.

According to Officer Chamberlin:
“GOOD TAKE OFF AND GOOD INTERVALS… AIR WAS ROUGH…SOME FLAK AND SMALL ARMS FIRE COMMENCING JUST BEFORE WE CUT AND CONTINUED ON THE WAY DOWN…SMOKE WAS HELPFUL OVER THE LZ…SMALL ARMS FIRE KEPT US PINNED DOWN FOR APPROX. ONE HOUR AFTER LANDING… DID NOT UNLOAD GLIDER…DUG IN SATURDAY NITE AND LEFT THE LZ SUNDAY MORN.”

Additional information by Officer Chamberlin was to have all the houses in the DZ and LZ destroyed.  The tug pilot was too high when they had to cut loose causing them to be in flak and small arms fire longer than they should have had they cut at their usual altitude of 500 feet or lower.  Officer Chamberlin was not a glider pilot in the sense of the word and he felt that he was not needed as a copilot. He also was not issued the usual weapon given the glider pilots for Varsity (Thompson or M1).  They both must have had a Carbine.  He reported damage to the glider on landing was holes from small arms fire and that the bottom of the glider was ripped out.  This is probably why they did not get the jeep out.  They were the first in their field. Landing Coordinates given were also 209 X 464.

The Last Drop details the horrors of parachuting through flak-filled skies, the dangers of piloting a glider safely to the ground, and the struggles of infantry combat, and shows how thorough training, extensive planning, solid execution, and sheer guts combined to make Operation Varsity a stunning victory.

This collection of letters written by her father (KIA in Operation Varsity) is edited by Scion Rives Fowlkes Carol. The book is available at Politics and Prose, 202-363-4119
In this viscerally exciting account, a paratrooper-turned-historian reveals the details of the largest airborne operation of World War II—one that dropped 17,000 Allied paratroopers deep into the heart of Nazi Germany.

On the morning of March 24, 1945, more than two thousand Allied aircraft droned through a cloudless sky toward Germany. Escorted by swarms of darting fighters, the armada of transport planes carried 17,000 troops to be dropped via parachute and glider, on the far banks of the Rhine River. Four hours later, after what was the war’s largest airdrop, all major objectives had been seized. The invasion smashed Germany’s last line of defense and gutted Hitler’s war machine; the war in Europe ended less than two months later.

Four Hours of Fury follows the 17th Airborne Division as they prepare for Operation Varsity, a campaign that would rival Normandy in scale and become one of the most successful and important of the war. Even as the Third Reich began to implode, it was vital for Allied troops to have direct access into Germany to guarantee victory—the 17th Airborne secured that bridgehead over the River Rhine. And yet their story has until now been relegated to history’s footnotes.

Reminiscent of A Bridge Too Far and Masters of the AirFour Hours of Fury does for the 17th Airborne what Band of Brothers did for the 101st. It is a captivating, action-packed tale of heroism and triumph spotlighting one of the most under-chronicled and dangerous operations of World War II.

Scion Richard Pohanish sent us this review of "Four Hours of Fury". Tooper Calpin's photo is below

I am a member of your organization. My father, Francis Calpin, served with Battery E of the 155th A/T A/A Battalion. I was able to obtain an advance reading copy of James Fenalon's new book about Operation Varsity entitled Four Hours of Frenzy. I wanted to report that it's an excellent read, containing a lot of nitty-gritty details about life in the 17th, as well as exciting stories of the Bulge and Varsity. For various reasons, Varsity was largely ignored by the press, as well as many WW2 historians. The author, Fenalon (a former paratrooper and jump master), has done a great job of placing this urgent and important event in its historical context. It will make for great reading on the beach this summer.

For many years, Trooper Bill Tom (194/C) was a major contributor to the original hard copy newsletter of the 17th Airborne Division Association, "Thunder From Heaven." After the dissolution of the Association in 2007, Bill began an email version of the newsletter, and continued that publication, "Thunder Mail Call" until the formation of the Scions Organization in 2011. With Bill's help, we integrated his newsletter into this publication. We were saddened to hear of Bills passing on September 10, 2019. We dedicate this portion of our newsletter to Bill.

IN MEMORY OF THE FALLEN SOLDIER
by Isaac Epps

   The ones who went
   Were truly sent
   To do a Noble Deed;
   When evil showed
   They took the load
   In Justice, they believed.
   They heard the call
   And gave their All
   And some did not not come back.
   They knew the chance

   But took the stance
   When Liberty was attacked.
   It Speaks of Duty, Faith; and Love;
   It speaks of a respect
   for Country; For Others,
   For the Right of Man;
   To forget would be neglect.
   On this Their Day

   We stop to pray
   Their Memory shall live;
   The sacrifice they made was Life.
   What more can someone Give?
