On May 6, tens of thousands of people are showing their support for their favorite nonprofits through GiveBIG Washington 2020. GiveBIG is an online giving campaign that celebrates and promotes philanthropy. The money we raise will help the Virginia V Foundation continue to provide one-of-a-kind learning experiences for kids and adults aboard this historic vessel.
Given the impact of COVID-19 on the nonprofit community, the need to give is bigger than ever. That’s why GiveBIG is open for early donations today and is partnering with #GivingTuesdayNow on a two-day celebration of giving. Additionally, the CARES Act now permits non-itemizers to take a deduction of up to $300 on top of the standard deduction for donations made this year. There has never been a better time to support the causes that matter to you!

Spring of 1922 found the VIRGINIA V under construction at Maplewood, WA, as shown here in this photograph taken by Ed Anderson. The ship was launched on March 9th, at the home of her builder, Matt Anderson. Ellen Bringloe, the postmistress at Camp Sealth, smashed a bottle of creek water against her bow and christened the ship VIRGINIA V but, at that time, the ship was still only a hull. That hull was towed to Seattle, where Heffernan Engine Works installed the engine and machinery, then returned to Maplewood to have the upper decks completed. The ship was completely finished by June that year and she took her maiden voyage on June 11th.
