Welcome to the April edition of the Contours Holidays newsletter. During the current situation here in the UK, the Contours team are working as hard as they can to ensure all of our customers are treated fairly, and that they receive all the information and advice they need. We have a dedicated Coronavirus page on our website, which we are updating regularly as situations change. Our team are currently working from home, so our phones are not being manned until further notice, but we are still available to contact via email, Facebook and Twitter during our usual office hours. On behalf of the entire team, we would like to apologise sincerely for any inconveniences and thank you for your patience and understanding during this unprecedented time.

In this month’s issue, Contours Director Karen walks us through the highlights of the Camel Trail, one of our new trail offerings for 2020, while regular contributor Beth Pipes shares her suggestions for quiet spring walks in Cumbria. We’ve got plenty of other features for you to enjoy as we wait out the outbreak and look forward to the future. Thanks for reading!

By Beth Pipe

After a winter that has seemed longer, harder and stormier than usual, isn’t it fantastic to finally crawl into spring, with the lighter evenings and some warmth in the sunshine (when we see it!)

Some places in Cumbria are, rightly, famed for their spring colour (places like the famous Rannerdale Bluebells), but there are some stunning hidden gems to explore where you’ll hardly see another soul, unless you bump into someone else who’s read this article...

The Wenford Dries to the
Doom Bar along the Camel Trail

By Karen Simons

What do the Wenford Dries, a source of china clay in North Cornwall, and the Doom Bar, a shifting sandbank, have in common? They are at either end of our new Camel Trail stile-free walk, once connected by the railway that serviced them both, carrying the sand for use on the fields and the clay from Bodmin Moor.

Blister Taping Techniques for
Your Next Walking Holiday

By Rebecca Rushton

A long walk in the picturesque wilderness of the British Isles requires a certain amount of planning and preparedness. The Contours team loves to help and they take away much of the logistical burden. But there are some aspects where you need to take the bull by the horns. Foot blister management is one of those.

autumn

Prevention is key when it comes to keeping happy feet. As a podiatrist, I may be biased, but I recommend you prioritise your feet in every way. Footwear, socks, spare socks, lacing techniques, cushioned insoles… leave no stone unturned. Their condition will determine whether you finish in pain or finish with a spring in your step, having enjoyed the very best of outdoor experiences.

Remote Rambles

With the hustle and bustle of busy lives often leaving us craving escape, we at Contours definitely appreciate the desire to break away from the rat race and pursue the serene seclusion of rural landscapes.

Last Month's Competition:
Guess Where?

Congratulations to Michiel de Both for being the lucky winner who correctly identified Dunstanburgh Castle, a 14th-century fortification on the coast of Northumberland, between the villages of Craster and Embleton. The castle was built by Earl Thomas of Lancaster between 1313 and 1322, taking advantage of the site's natural defences and the existing earthworks of an Iron Age fort.
