Message from the Centre Leader

Profile photo of Trygve BrautasetDear all.

When writing this we have been through one week of complete state of emergency because of the Corona virus outbreak.

I believe most of us are busy solely dealing with handling our primary activities related to research and education, as well as taking care of the sudden challenges in our everyday lives.

The Centre has naturally postponed planned events and activities requiring physical meetings this Spring, and we have rapidly re-prioritized to accommodate the situation at our best. In the time to come, remember that the Network Project is a resource and competence available to assist and advice all of you Digital Life Norway projects.

Trygve Brautaset

UPCOMING ACTIVITIES

Most our events have been cancelled or postponed. We will be back with an updated list as soon as the Corona situation has stabilized.

Cyberspace trial lecture

PhD student Camilla Håkonsrud Jensen in the AHA!-project at Dept of Biological Sciences UiB gave her trial lecture for the PhD degree Thursday 19 March. The given title was “Ecology of fear”, which turned out to be even more relevant than thought of at the time it was decided.

As for other Norwegian universities, the UiB campus is closed down for all teaching. Camilla presented from home via Microsoft Teams, the committee were in their homes, and the audience of 20-30 were also listening and watching from home.

The leader of the committee administered questions from the audience after the talk, almost as if they were all sitting together. Camilla’s talk was excellent. She will conduct her disputation Tuesday 21 April.

dCod PhD defense

A PhD candidate in the dCod 1.0 project has finished his degree. Håvard G. Frøysa defended his PhD at the University of Bergen in February. The title of his thesis was: Estimation and identifiability of kinetic parameters in dynamical models of biochemical reaction networks. Håvard continues to be temporarily employed in the dCod project.

BEDPAN symposium opened new doors

The BEDPAN project conducted a two day symposium the beginning of March. Partners and collaborators, and guests from different fields were invited to discuss the flow of the project. The symposium was organized with support from DLN and Inven2. The partners introduced themselves and then followed a discussion on the current results and setting up the next experimental steps. On the second day, company representatives from the field of electronics and chemical catalysis were invited to discuss possible applications for nanoparticles the BEDPAN project develops. The symposium was very fruitful - many new ideas and possible applications were brought up from the collective brainstorming, that might open new doors for the project's innovation ideas.
Pavlo Mikheenko, a physicist within condensed matter, demonstrated the basic property of superconductivity - levitation of a superconductor, below a magnet at the BEDPAN symposium.

New Digital Life project presentations

Another few of the latest research projects to join the Centre have received informative and well written presentations on our web pages. Have a look at how Wastewater-AMR investigate the spread of antimicrobial resistance in wastewater treatment plants, how nanoRIP combines optical and mathematical systems to improve nanoscope technology, and how machine learning and deep learning models are used to analyse medical images and image-related data (MedImML).

COMMON GROUND

Transdisciplinary publication of the year - 2019

We are excited to announce the winner of «Transdisciplinary publication of the year - 2019» a publication from the PerCaThe project: Lai et al., published in Cancer Research, is an excellent example of how theoretical and experimental approaches can be combined, in this case, to improve treatment of breast cancer patients. DOI: 10.1158/0008-5472.CAN-18-1804

Cross-Project activities

The three projects AurOmega, dCod 1.0 and DigiSal met earlier this month for the workshop Lipidomics in systems biology – methodology and data handling. It was supported through DLN's Cross-project activity funding scheme.

Furthermore, the centre will support a collaborative project between two new partner projects, Calinhib and LiquidBiop, through this support scheme.

We invite our projects to continue to submit applications. Read more.

DLN Innovation funding

All the centre's research projects can apply for financial support for activities necessary to progress in the innovation process of the projects, such as: business idea scouting and/or definition, market validation, customer exploration, business modelling, partner search, development of research-based advice to practitioners or policy-makers etc.

The funding can be used for hiring external expertise or for costs related to traveling  to meet with potential customers, users, partners etc.
