Welcome to the first Hardy Happenings -- Student Edition! This week we are featuring some of the amazing work created by Hardy 4th and 5th graders! We are blown away by their creativity! Thank you for your participation. Hardy School rules!
Next week we will be featuring work by 2nd and 3rd graders, so please submit to ajoclarke@gmail.com by next Friday, April 3 at 10 am to be included.

The Boom Bang Bangity Bang Bang of the American Revolution
There are many exciting and interesting facts about the American Revolution. The food was disgusting! There were wormy biscuits and flavorless meat. The American Revolution lasted for eight years! Kids loved eel pie. (I don't.) The pie was made of slimy water snakes baked in a pie and the Americans loved it. (Eew!) In the American Revolution, there was no toilet paper so they used corn cobs instead! Eek! That must have hurt! New shoes were really painful. It took months to grow into them.
The olden days were really painful!

The Intercontinental Book Club
A short story by Keira M., 4th Grade
I’ve always been a bookworm. That’s why when my teacher suggested for me to enroll in an International Online Book club, I gave her an eager YES! I hoped to make some friends with interest like mine, while speaking in English about the book. In the book club, you are placed in groups of three kids, and you talk about different books. But I was placed with an Italian girl and a Japanese boy, who were both very shy about their English, and on top of all of that, I had to wake up at five, in order to be on time to the book club at eight o’clock. The entire hour all we did was stare at each other saying nothing. When we hung up I convinced myself that it would get better. But for another month, all that we did was just stare at each other saying nothing. The only thing that I learned was that Italian houses are very cute. One day Alina, the girl, spoke up.
“I liked The Vanderbeekers on 141st Street.” She said. But nobody said anything back. The next meeting I was prepared. The night before, I had scoured the library for books on Italian and Japanese. Then to both Alina and Josh I talked about how I was just like Isa, except for the violin part. We debated over who we were most like, until the last second of the call. By the end of the year, the three of us were laughing together like old friends, and even sending each other postcards from different places around the world! I’ve never thought that books could teach you so much about different cultures, and about how no matter what gets in your way, you can always be friends.

The Cat Chase
A realistic fiction story by Madelyn H., 4th Grade
Prologue: Sarah
“That cat is so cute!” said Sarah's mom, who sneezed when a silver tabby
cat rubbed against her leg and purred loudly.
“He even has hypoallergenic fur! Too bad that he’s too expensive!”
Sarah’s mom sighed.
Sarah and her twin sister, June exchanged glances. They were interrupted by their little sister, Emily.
“Maybe they’ll lower the price soon.” said Emily optimistically.
“I don’t think so honey,” said Sarah’s mom.
Sarah studied the cat cafe, looking at the off-white walls and the cat
nooks which were fancy, yet they still fit in with the cat cafe theme, which
could easily be the same as Starbucks, but the only difference was the cats
and their things.
“He would make a great double digits gift for me and June!” Sarah
pleaded.
“. . .”
“C’mon, you just admitted that you wanted to get a kitten,”
June added
“No.” Said Sarah’s mom plainly.
“Pppllleeeeeaaassseee,” Sarah and her two sisters begged, trying to
look heartbroken so their mom would feel some empathy and let them get
a kitten, but she wasn't easily fooled, and the fact that the sisters ended up
looking like they had to go to the bathroom didn't help their cause.
“You know you’re really failing to convince me this way,̈ said
Sarah's mom.
