The Northern California Nevada Conference of the United Church of Christ seeks to be a community of diverse congregations which nurtures, supports, and unites local churches in faithful covenant in Christ to carry out ministry and mission in the world.

Summer Camp Season for 2020 cancelled

Conference Council made the really hard decision at its meeting on Saturday to cancel the NCNC camp program at both Camp Cazadero and Camp Tamarack for the 2020 summer season. Although our government officials have not yet indicated that the shelter in place order will extend into the summer, the camping season requires a lot of preparation and it requires the commitment of both campers and counselors enough in advance that proper training and preparation can happen.

The registration of campers for this summer’s program is low and both parents and potential counselors have indicated that they cannot register their child at this time because summer plans are just so unknown.

Council also had a lengthy discussion about the camping program in general and of a proposed resolution to Annual Gathering related to the camping program. In response to this, an effort for deep and important conversations about how to revision our entire camping program that will speak to the current needs of our youth and all of our churches has been initiated. We want to revision how our camp program can speak to the diversity and the needs of our churches as we all seek to be the hands and feet of Christ in our communities and in the wider world.

Using the time that the COVID-19 crisis has created for us, we will create a discernment team to begin brainstorming and to create a Conference-wide listening program that will give us the information and the vision for making important decisions that will lead to a re-imagined camping program in 2021. A small team representing the diversity of this Conference will be chosen by Conference Council and will begin its work in the very near future via online video calls. If you are interested in serving on this team, email Conference Council President Richard Brabham at brabhamr@ncncucc.org. Not everyone who submits their name will be able to serve. Council will consider all the names submitted to create a diverse team to begin this work. Deadline to submit names is March 31.
