Student Living on Campus Tests Positive for COVID-19
A BC student currently living on campus has tested positive for COVID-19, according to a statement from Executive Vice President Michael Lochhead that was released on Monday. The student was placed in quarantine as a precaution before the test came back positive, and the student is now in isolation. This is the only confirmed case among students, faculty, and staff on campus. BC has now received 19 self-reported cases from students who are not on campus, an increase from the 12 self-reported cases the University had reported on Saturday.
BC Accepts 24 Percent of Class of 2024 Applicants
Just over 7,000 students have been accepted to BC in the Class of 2024, with an acceptance rate of 24 percent. These students must make their decisions remotely after the suspension of all on-campus visits due to the coronavirus outbreak. The Office of Undergraduate Admission is planning virtual opportunities for students admitted to the Class of 2024 in an effort to provide some of the experiences it normally would with information sessions and admitted students days.
Jim Christian Will Return for 2020-2021 Season
BC men’s basketball finished this year with a 13-19 record and went 7-13 in the ACC, making the 2019-20 season Jim Christian’s fifth losing season in his six years on the Heights. Despite some fans calling for a coaching change, Christian will be sticking around for at least another year, as Director of Athletics Martin Jarmond has elected to keep Christian on the staff for the 2020-21 season.
Local Businesses Struggle as BC Students Leave Campus
While the administration’s decision to close BC’s doors for the spring semester made a significant impact on many members of the BC community, the shutdown was also felt by Chestnut Hill’s small businesses, many of which rely heavily on some of their most loyal customers—BC students. Today at noon, Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker’s order that all non-essential businesses close will go into effect. For now, White Mountain, Crazy Dough’s Pizza, and Richdale Food Shops will be staying open. But without BC students, the future of these off-campus eateries is uncertain.
NCAA Open to an Additional Year of Eligibility for Spring Athletes
After the NCAA canceled remaining athletic championships and several conferences suspended athletic activity through the remainder of the 2019-20 season, the NCAA Division I Council Coordination Committee has agreed that spring athletes deserve an additional year of eligibility to make up for their lost season. The full Division I council will meet on March 30 to vote on eligibility relief along with other issues, according to a Friday press release

On this day in 1986, The Heights published that three Roncalli residents were accused of arson for causing a fire in the residence hall on March 16. The BC police department determined the fire was accidental and the result of a bottle rocket under a door.
