March 2020 Update

Your monthly update from the DYW West team.
COVID-19 Impact

As you already know, the impact of the Coronavirus is clear to see as all non-essential workers are required to work from home for the foreseeable future. This includes DYW West and again you will probably already know that our host organisation West College Scotland has been closed until further notice but is still fully operational online to help stop the spread of COVID-19 and as such DYW West will be working from home during this period. Although we won't be in our usual office, we are still available! We're still just a phone call or an email away and are still committed to helping our future workforce and even more so through these difficult times.
Most importantly, we want everyone to stay safe and follow the Scottish and British Government's advice on how to prevent further spread of the virus. There are many ways we can do this with great resources being shared across social media about washing hands, self-isolating, social distancing and how to keep busy during this time:

If anyone knows of any useful resources please send them our way and we will share them across our social channels!

Future DYW West Events

Again, due to current circumstances, upcoming events and programmes we had planned/were attending have either been cancelled or postponed until further notice:

Hire Me Workshop with Renfrewshire Council, 24th & 26th March - Cancelled with hopes of doing an online version (TBC)
Pathways to STEM, 24th March - Cancelled, hopefully rearranged (TBC)
Greenpower East Fortune Heat, 27th March - Cancelled
Young Scotland's Got Talent, 10th June - Postponed
Girls with Skills - Cancelled
International Woman's Day events with DXC Technology - Postponed

#DYWPledge

Recently we started the #DYWPledge campaign across our social media channels and we're looking for employers to get involved. We understand that this is a tough time for businesses and young people and that's why we're asking employers to make a pledge to reassure our future workforce that there will still be opportunities for them once we return to some normality.

How to get involved:

Option1: Record and post a video on social media with hashtag #DYWPledge and tag DYW West, briefly talking about your pledge to young people – e.g. apprenticeships still open or have been extended/expect to open later in the year, expected work placements to continue later in the year, access to online resources etc…

See the video our Director, Bob, made as an example

Option2: Or take a photo of you holding a template listing high-level details of your pledge(s).

Greenpower Update
As previously mentioned, unfortunately the Greenpower East Fortune Heat is cancelled. But that doesn't mean there isn't some good news for our Greenpower teams!

We'd like to personally thank Craig and Martin from Turkey Red Media for donating race suits and helmets to the West Dunbartonshire teams and Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce for donating race suits to the Renfrewshire team. This kind of donation can be used for future teams on the Greenpower Programme for the years to come.

As for the East Fortune race, we're working with West College Scotland to try and ensure that there is still something for this year's teams even if it is a postponed event. Of course this will depend on the ever-changing situation we find ourselves in and Scottish Government guidelines.
Live Streaming Resources
Over the coming weeks and months we're committing now more than ever to give young people the resources they need to help with their future careers. One of the ways in which we'll be doing this is through Facebook/Youtube live streaming as we aim to give the next generation all the tools they need to start a successful career. Some topics will include job interviews, application forms, growth sectors & more. So, keep an eye on our social media channels for the next live stream and remember to like, follow & subscribe so you don't miss out!
Scottish Apprenticeship Week
Thank you to everyone who took part in Scottish Apprenticeship Week this year! We had a great week and were involved in lots of great events Including the Inverclyde Apprenticeship Careers Fair which had an excellent range of employers there including Diodes Inc, BBC Scotland, Scottish Leather Group & more! Check out this photo album from the day!

Also, we'd like to personally extend our thanks to all the businesses who got involved with the We Support Apprenticeships campaign. Lots of great companies agreed to get behind our banner and show that they support apprenticeships and helping young people to kick-start their careers.
International Women's Day
We celebrated International Women's Day in style once again this year as we spread it across a whole week! With a particular focus on getting young women into STEM subjects and industries, we took groups on tours of some of the largest employers in the West Region. Seeing behind the scenes at the Inverclyde Royal hospital, Royal Alexandria hospital, British Airways and Rolls-Royce will hopefully inspire young women to pick more STEM subjects and a career in a STEM-related industry!
Opportunities for Young People
There are still new opportunities out there for young people that we will continue to share across social media. For example, Aggreko are hiring for Graduate Engineering Apprentices & Modern Engineering Apprentices, Diodes are looking for Engineering Apprentices, NHS GGC are hiring for immediate work, call centres are looking for immediate starts as well as multiple supermarkets and shops like Co-Op, Morrisons Tesco.
Young Enterprise Renfrewshire Area Finals
On March 12th, The Normandy Hotel welcomed the Young Enterprise Renfrewshire Area Finals which saw excellent presentations from teams from all over the West of Scotland. Congratulations to all teams for making it this far and to all the winners and runners-up. Want to see more? check out this photo album and video from the day.
