It is fairly unavoidable to have this newsletter not address the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak, as this has caused a notable strain on most co-workers and processes at Lund University. We at Research Services are working towards offering the same type and level of support that we have previously planned for. However, please be aware that we might come to experience periods when we are understaffed, resulting in prolonged reply times. Keep an eye out on our blog for any updates.

Corona virus pushes deadlines forward
At the time of writing, the following larger funders have announced that applications have been extended due to the COVID-19 outbreak:
Swedish Research Council (VR). See affected calls. Original deadlines: 31 mars. New deadlines: 7 April 2020.
Horizon2020. Filter out directives for respective calls here.
Wallenberg Foundations. Affected calls: MMW & MAW: Project grants including WASP-HS. Original deadline: 1 April. New deadline: 14 april. KAW: WAF 2015 prolongation grant. Original deadline: 1 April. New deadline: 14 April.
Riksbankens Jubileumsfond with Volkswagen Foundation, Compagnia de San Paolo and the Wallenberg Foundations. Affected calls: Global Issues thematic call. New deadline: 13 May. (See details in call list below.)
Asthma & Allergy Association. Affected call: Knowledge gaps. Original deadline: 16 March. New deadline: 15 June. Committee selection work and announcement date will also be pushed forward; no dates are decided as of yet. Projects will thus not be able to commence until 2021. Länsförsäkringar Reseach Fund. Affected call: Reciprocity and price setting in the damage insurance industry. Original deadline: 1 April. New deadline: 14 April.
In general: Key research funders have their own directives on the COVID-19 situation and how this may affect calls and grant management: e.g. SSMF temporarily changes the terms for grant holders, and STINT encourages all recipients and scholarship holders to keep themselves up to date with the travel recommendations issued by the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs. Formas informs that they are working to make sure that calls that offer funding from 2020 and onwards to be implemented as planned. Forte handles requests to extend the project duration in accordance with Fortes normal procedures, and Vinnova’s ambition is that calls and decisions will carry on as planned.

Extended deadline: Horizon Impact Award 2020
On 13 February, the European Commission launched the 2020 edition of Horizon Impact Award – a prize dedicated to EU-funded projects whose results have created societal impact across Europe and beyond. These projects must have been funded by FP7 and/or Horizon 2020 funding programmes and they must be closed by the time of application.
The deadline for applications has been extended until 15 April 2020.

ERC: Important information regarding the transition to Horizon Europe
With the EU’s transition to the new Framework Programme Horizon Europe approaching, it is not unusual to see disruption in regular funding calls such as those from the European Research Council (ERC). The ERC have published a guide to what disruption and changes researchers can expect during this transition on their website.
In short, researchers can expect the following changes to the usual ERC calls:
Advanced Grants 2020: No change expected.
Starting Grant 2021, Consolidator Grant 2021: Delayed for approximately 6 months. The eligibility criteria for both calls are unchanged.
Advanced Grant 2021: Delayed, new evaluation process to include interviews at step 2. The eligibility criteria is unchanged.
Synergy Grant 2021: Cancelled, but expected to resume for the 2022 calls with a deadline in November 2021.
New panels: Two new evaluation panels: “Materials Engineering” (PE11) and “Human Mobility, Environment and Space” (SH7). These panels will apply to all Starting, Consolidator and Advanced Grants from the 2021 calls and forward.
We at Research Services plan to run our full support programme for all of these calls, but will change when we begin to suit the new deadlines. Support for the Advanced Grant 2020 call will begin as planned with a workshop on April 21.

MSCA Individual Fellowships workshop 27 May
The workshop is for LU researchers who plan to recruit a post-doc from abroad, and for post-docs who want to apply with Lund University as host and already have a project idea and contact with a supervisor at LU. Note that a post-doc who complies with the mobility rule (see below) and was hired by LU later than 10 September 2019 can apply.
- Time and location for the workshop: 27 May 8.30-16.30, at Pufendorfinstitutet, Biskopsgatan 3, Lund.
- The workshop is run by Research Services, and will include participation from an evaluator, previous grantees and the HR department. Participants will receive strategic and practical advice for writing a competitive application.
- The workshop will be held in English. Attendance is free of charge.
Mobility rule: the fellow cannot have resided or carried out his/her main activity in Sweden for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the submission deadline 9 September 2020.
Register here no later than 4 May 2020.
In order to participate, participants must submit a one-page synopsis of the project, and the fellow’s CV no later than 15 May.

MSCA Individual Fellowships online workshop call 2020
The online workshop is intended for fellows who want to apply with Lund University as host and already have a project idea and contact with a supervisor at LU. Supervisors are also welcome to register. Participants who cannot attend the onsite workshop 27 May (see also above) will be prioritised.
The workshop is a recorded version of an onsite workshop organised in May 2019, run by Kwintessence, a consultancy firm with experience in running MSCA workshops and in pre-submission review of MSCA grants. The workshop participants will receive strategic and practical advice for writing a competitive application.
- Time: online access at your convenience from May to the call deadline.
- Registration: Register here no later than 17 June. In order to participate, the fellow must have the approval of their supervisor and host department.
- Confirmation: When you have registered and received confirmation you will get information on how to access the workshop online.
The workshop is in English. Attendance is free of charge.

MSCA Individual Fellowships fund
The Marie Sklodowska-Curie (MSCA) Individual Fellowships fund promising (post)doctoral researchers looking to enhance their career development and prospects by working abroad. KU Leuven allows you to work in a first class research environment while benefitting from an attractive remuneration package.
All nationalities can apply, all areas of research are welcome. You have to come to Europe, move within Europe or move outside of Europe. You will have your doctoral degree or at least four years' full-time research experience by the time of the call deadline.

MSCA Individual Fellowships – an opportunity to recruit a colleague!
The MSCA Individual Fellowships offer post-doc funding 12-24 months. The fellow may be recruited from abroad or may already have a position at LU. For both categories a mobility rule applies, which for the call 2020 means that the fellow can have resided or carried out her main activity in the country of the host organisation for no more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the deadline 9 September 2020.

Do you not yet have a candidate but are thinking about recruiting? This is the time to start looking. The MSCA-Ifs can be used for funding a single post-doc, but they can also be used to enable structured mobility within your already established networks.

Riksbankens Jubileumsfond support to Research initiation in Social Sciences and Humanities

Opportunities with Swedish Society for Medical Research (SSMF)
SSMF Large Grant
Four year establishment grants are available for younger researchers in medicine. The purpose of the grant is to provide the prerequisites needed for the researcher to develop his/hers individual lines of research and establish successful research groups. The grants are full-time or half-time where the latter is intended for clinically active researchers.
Starting 2020, the grant sum is increased in order to provide better economic conditions for medical practitioners who wishes to conduct research in parallel to their clinical employment. The increase means that salary costs up to 800 000 SEK per year, and running costs up to 900 000 SEK per year, will be covered.

Opportunities with the Swedish Bank Research Foundation (Bankforskningsinstitutet)
BFI supports academic research on financial institutions and markets, and awards scholarships especially for doctoral students, carrying out research in the selected field. Call for scholarship applications 2020:
Individual scholarships for PhD students to cover living cost and related research expenses for up to one year at a time. Individual scholarships for post-doc researchers can in some cases also be considered.
Applicants who has received a scholarship may be considered for supplementary grants to cover costs of special research expenses that are essential to a particular project as well as travel grants.

Swedish Retail and Wholesale Council: Scholarships for post docs and doctoral students
Post doc scholarship
The call is aimed at PhDs that has recently defended their doctoral thesis and wishes to (continue) focusing on trade related research questions. The funding is intended to support the applicant’s research; however the research can – and in most cases should – be combined with academic tutoring (no more than 30%).
Doctoral student scholarship
The call is aimed at PhD students that currently are studying, or are planning to study, trade related research questions. Preferably, the candidate has finished the first half of his/hers doctoral training.

JRC: New call for the Collaborative Doctoral Partnership Program
The importance of science-based evidence for policy-making is increasingly recognized, and to enhance the science-policy interface, the Joint Research Centre (JRC) has launched the Collaborative Doctoral Partnership (CDP) program to establish collaborations with Higher Education Institutions and universities from EU Member States and countries associated to the EU Research Programme Horizon 2020. Participation in the scheme will allow a new generation of students to understand research needs at different stages of the policy cycle, and acquire new skills in science communication.
The JRC launched on 3 February 2020 a second call for expressions of interest in thirteen thematic fields. The call is open to higher education institutions / universities from EU Member States and countries associated to the EU Research Programme Horizon 2020.

STINT Capstone Awards
The purpose of the Capstone Awards Programme is to increase the benefits of mobility programmes financed by foreign stakeholders. The programme consists of small scholarships for students and young researchers who have been accepted in selected programmes supported by a foreign funding organisation. The application to STINT is to be submitted along with the application to the foreign funding organisation. Grants are SEK 5,000 for stays abroad up to three months and SEK 10,000 for longer stays.

Swedish Cancer Foundation research grants
The Swedish Cancer Society fund high quality research and welcome applications from researchers in many different fields, such as natural science, medicine, healthcare, technology, pharmaceutics, public health, social science, behavioral and communication science.
Calls for projects, increased support, research months for health care employed staff and planning groups are now open.
In particular, applications and innovative ideas within the following fields are encouraged:
- Healthcare (e.g. quality of life, rehabilitation, palliative care)
- Public health science (e.g. epidemiology, prevention, lifestyle factors)
- Social sciences (e.g. health economics, sociology)

Riksbankens Jubileumsfond: Research Ethics call
Grants aimed at 1-3 year long research ethics projects have been made available by Riksbankens Jubileumsfond together with the Royal Swedish Academy of Letters and the Swedish Research Council. Both individual researchers as well as smaller research groups with connection to Sweden may apply. All researchers must have earned a doctoral degree. Grant may amount to between 1-8 MSEK. The call is open to all areas but researchers within the humanities and the social sciences are encouraged to apply.

Global Issues – Integrating Different Perspectives
Global Issues is a funding framework aiming to enable international research collaboration and generate insights on understudied issues of urgent global relevance. It is an ‘umbrella’ for various calls on different themes reflecting challenges acknowledged by the United Nations' sustainable development agenda as requiring specific attention. It is hoped that this initiative will support and strengthen innovative research in collaboration between researchers based in different parts of the world who usually do not join forces.
Thematic Call: Integrating Different Perspectives on Cultural Heritage and Change
The call is a joint funding initiative of Compagnia di San Paolo (Italy), Riksbankens Jubileumsfond (Sweden), The Wallenberg Foundations (Sweden) and the Volkswagen Foundation (Germany).
The call is directed to multilateral research teams to investigate the processes and research questions of cultural heritage – heritage as an agent for and an object of change. While the disciplinary focus should be on the humanities and social sciences, input from other disciplines is welcome. The research should address processes performed by a certain sense of urgency resulting from global developments in the 21st century and adopt either a regional or comparative perspective.
The application process is organized in two phases. This is a call for pre-proposals to be submitted by 13 May 2020. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to present their project at a review panel meeting.

SSF Industrial Doctoral Students
The Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research (SSF) invests 30 MSEK on industry-based doctoral students. SFF expects to grant c. 12 projects a maximum of 2.5 MSEK each. This applies to people that has not yet been accepted to their doctoral studies. The student shall engage in research within science, technology or medicine, and must be at least 80% employed. Projects are to start between 1 December 2020 and 30 June 2021.

Swedish Brain Foundation (Hjärnfonden) Post-doctoral scholarships
The Swedish Brain Foundation announces post-doc scholarships of 300 000 SEK across two years, where the grantee hands in a short progress report at the start of year 2. These scholarships are open to applicants with a Swedish doctoral degree. A minimum of 50% activity grade is required.

Asthma & Allergy Association: additional research funding
During 2020, additional funding will support research on food allergies in children. A project may be granted up to 1 MSEK per year for a maximum of 5 years. In total, the Research Fund will offer 10 MSEK during a 5 year period. Hence, applications must stand in relation to the size of the funds.
Proposed project must address the 10 identified knowledge gaps.

BFUF research funding call 2020
The R&D Fund of the Swedish Tourism & Hospitality Industry (BFUF) invites applications focused on two themes: 1) ‘Attractive businesses – satisfied coworkers’ and 2) ‘The tourism industry’s contribution to a reduced carbon footprint.
Projects shall contribute to develop knowledge in gain of the tourism industry and its organizations, personnel and/or customers.

The Jeansson Foundations Support to medical research, Annual Starting Grant
The Jeansson Foundations welcomes applications to the Starting Grant call, aimed at younger researchers that are in the process of establishing their own research team. The applicant should be associated with a higher education department and have earned their doctoral degree no earlier than 2014. One applicant can only be granted funds twice; please specify if your applications concern a continuation grant. Funds should not be used to cover the applicant’s own salary.

Opportunities with Energiforsk
Project ideas wanted in two research programs:
The Digitization of the power distribution grid is a program that enables the energy sector to influence and prepare for the changes and challenges that comes with tomorrow’s power distribution. STIAS Fellowships for Swedish researchers (all areas)
STIAS provides and maintains an independent ‘creative space for the mind’ to advance the cause of science and scholarship across all disciplines. It is global in its reach and local in its African roots, and values original thinking and innovation in this context. In summary, the idea is that distinguished researchers shall be given the opportunity to engage in undistracted research, achieved by a sustained (1-3 month or more) stay at STIAS. Admittance to the STIAS programme is either by invitation or by application. STIAS welcomes fellowship applications on a semester deadline basis.
Applications by Swedish researchers will be considered within the framework of support provided by the Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation, or in the case of applications related to STIAS Theme projects, the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation.

COST Action proposal
The European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) is a funding organisation for the creation of international research networks, called COST Actions.
COST funding intends to complement national research funds, as they are exclusively dedicated to cover collaboration activities, such as workshops, conferences, working group meetings, training schools, short-term scientific missions, and dissemination and communication activities.
A COST Action proposal can be submitted at any time of the year. Proposals are collected up to twice a year. It is also possible to join ongoing COST Actions, have a look at the new ones that was recently launched 25 March.

STINT Initiation Grants 2020
The purpose of STINT’s activity is to strengthen the competitiveness of Swedish universities and colleges through the development of international relationships. Initiation grants are given for the implementation of short-term projects targeting the building of new and strategically interesting international relationships.
Applications may be submitted continuously throughout the year. Upcoming 2020 deadlines: 29 May, 4 September, 6 November (15:00 applies to all the above).

SSMF Travel grants for doctoral students
The Swedish Society for Medical Research (Svenska Sällskapet för Medicinsk Forskning, SSMF) awards travel grants to doctoral students pursuing preclinical and clinical medical research in Sweden.
Call is only open to registered doctoral students who have co-authored and published at least one peer-reviewed article. Travel may begin no earlier than one month after the application deadline.
Applications may be submitted electronically four times per year with deadlines 1 March, 1 June, 1 September and 1 December. The application system opens 2 weeks prior to the deadlines.

The Marcus Wallenberg Prize
The Prize is awarded to recognize, encourage and stimulate path-breaking scientific achievements which contribute significantly to broader knowledge and/or technical development within all subjects relevant to the forest-based sector all over the world. Nominations of candidates are accepted via an internet-form or by e-mail or mail, at any time of the year, and are considered by the Marcus Wallenberg Prize Selection Committee in a continuous process.

OECD facilitating an AI overview
Late February this year, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) launched the AI Policy Observatory platform to share and shape public policies for responsible, trustworthy and beneficial AI.
A central goal is to make available information on AI and help promote an international discussion on e.g. AI best practices, development, frameworks, and much more. Highly relevant if you are interested in getting an overview of e.g. different nations AI initiatives, or AI in specific sectors.
