We have all been affected by the health crisis, which is global but affects us locally. With the wisely imposed closure of municipal buildings in Niagara-on-the-Lake, borrowing, visits and all in-person programs at the library are cancelled until further notice.
This is a time for the library to make the most of technology, which can enable us all to stay connected, informed, and entertained. This special edition of our monthly newsletter provides details of some of our new offerings. Highlights include:
- Wi-fi availability 24/7, which works as far away as the community centre parking lot and our back garden, depending on the capability of your device
- increasing our selection of electronic resources, such as magazines, which can be accessed online
- increasing our entertainment & instructional streaming videos, again which can be accessed online
Please make use of our services as we all battle these difficult days. And remember, we are still only a call, online chat or e-mail away!

I write to you from my home office after our Lord Mayor declared a state of emergency and the Ontario Premier announced the closing of non-essential businesses at midnight tonight. I know how essential the library is in our community and how you rely on us. Although we are closed for in-person visits, our virtual services are available as usual. Library staff is working hard to bring you programs and information via our website and social media and to ensure our electronic collection expands and adapts to meet your needs.
Children’s Librarian, Kasia Dupuis, ran our first NOTLLibrary:Live livestream workshop yesterday on Instagram and it was very successful. Under Kasia’s guidance, eighteen participants created birch tree forest paintings using a few simple materials and only three paint colours. More workshops are planned as well as technology instructional videos and virtual storytimes.
We’ve also expanded our e-resource offerings and encourage you to explore them:
- Cloud Library - e-books & audio e-books
- Mango Languages - online language learning
- Heritage Portal – local history
- Glassdoor – jobs, careers & recruiting
- G1 – driver practice tests
- SERENE-RISC – cybersecurity training
- ONF-NFB – National Film Board streaming video
- RB Digital – e-magazines
Let your family, friends, and neighbours know they can sign up for a free library membership online and access these resources to stay informed and entertained while social distancing at home: https://notl.niagaraevergreen.ca/eg/opac/register
While the library’s closed, you can reach a staff member during regular opening hours at 1-289-401-3216. Staff is also available via real-time chat from our website and via email. Our book returns are closed but any items you have checked out will automatically renew and we are not charging fines.
Stay home, stay healthy and stay in touch with your friends at the library.
