I hope this newsletter finds you healthy amidst this unprecedented world event. While physical distancing is difficult, it is essential to saving lives. That doesn’t mean we have to distance ourselves socially. Now more than ever, we need to lean on our connections to stay emotionally balanced.
The events of the last few weeks have left many of us scrambling to make sense of what’s happening while worrying about the long-term implications for ourselves and our businesses. The uncertainty is even greater for service organizations and non-profits who (even in the best of times) struggle to find and keep enough members and volunteers to carry out their important work.
On January 25 (which seems like a lifetime ago), I delivered a TEDx Talk on the undeniable physical and mental benefits of service to others and why charitable organizations must change the way they recruit volunteers. My hope is that my 13-minute talk, “Should Self-Interest Motivate Service?”, encourages you to reach out to the organizations and causes that are meaningful to you and offer your services—either virtually or in-person when this difficult time passes (and it will pass). If you are a service club or a non-profit, consider whether altruistic appeals that worked in the past are enough to sustain your organization going forward—or if the script needs to be flipped for the greater good.
