Take this opportunity to unplug and READ!

Instead of focusing on the doom & gloom - take this time to intentionally unplug and make positive memories with your family. (and then keep doing them!)

Here are a few suggestions...

  • Do Jigsaw Puzzles together. (all of Usborne puzzles come with a book)
  • Have a coloring party - free activity sheets are below.
  • Get out your deck of cards/board games & have a Family Game Night!
  • Play chess (benefits of chess - Starting Chess book - first chess moves)
  • Do a Pizza Party - have several toppings to create a pizza on a tortilla.
  • Have a Magic Painting night. My grandsons LOVE these!
  • Read through a novel together as a family or read to your grandkids -

GRANDPARENTS, MAKE SOME MEMORIES...


Marco Polo is perfect for grandparents to read books to their grandkids daily.
Or, older kids can send grandparents a video of them reading a chapter a day with Marco Polo or switch back and forth with the grandparent reading every other day.

Marco Polo is like an answering machine in that you leave messages and those receiving listen to them when it fits their schedule - except that it is video recordings. HINT: create a Marco Polo "group" with all your grandkids/friends and read a book to all of them at once - and they can watch it (and re-watch it) at their convenience.
(Note: as with all technology, parents need to be involved and supervise kids' use.)

This can be an anxious time for children because of disruption in their routine, not being able to see friends or visit grandparents and taking on the stress of the adults around them.

Here's a bit of grandmotherly advice... :-)

 
  • Don't watch the news when your kids are awake - they are taking in the stress even if you think they are not listening.
 
  • Spend more time with your children reading and playing games. Be intentional about make positive memories.
 
  • Keep up with their education, but be sure to make it FUN to keep your children learning for a lifetime. Focus on delight-directed learning.
 
  • Read books that offer the opportunity to talk about emotions and situations for character. development. Ex: I read Red, Red, Red to my 4 year old grandson over Marco Polo when he shared how he was so mad at a boy as it gives a skill of counting to 10 when you are so angry you are seeing "RED". 
 
  • Use the Mental Health Resource Pack above for more ideas of how to help the children in your life navigate their emotions.
