Supporter Newsletter: March 2020

A message from the Chief Executive, Emelita Robbins

This has been a challenging month as we have all seen the impact of Coronavirus across the globe and now within our own Island community. In order to adhere to government advice, we’ve had to make a number of changes at Hospice including the suspension of our day hospice services, but our care for those living with dying continues. We are so grateful to our many volunteers whom we’ve had to step down for now, our supporters who continue to raise vital funds for us, and our dedicated Hospice team who continue to work either remotely or directly with patients.

As you’ll have seen in the article published in the Bailiwick Express this week, charities are really going to struggle this year and Hospice is no exception. As events are cancelled and our shops close in line with current public health advice, and donations pause as people worry about their jobs, we are going to be hit hard by the island’s incremental shutdown in response to the virus outbreak. Our shops alone bring in around £20,000 a week and so their closure will have an enormous impact on us.

We are asking everyone to continue supporting Hospice as best they can. Even though many will be anxious about the future, the patients that we care for need our support today. Hospice was created by the community for the community and is supported by the community. None of this has changed and today, more than ever, we need our community to continue supporting us so we can support others. We simply cannot do what we do without you and this month’s newsletter is dedicated to celebrating this. Stay safe, stay well.

This month we were delighted to receive a grant of £10,000 from Philip’s Footprints towards the funding of our bereavement and emotional support services for families who have experienced the loss, or who are about to experience the loss of a child. They recognise the excellent support offered by our team at Hospice and have been regularly signposting grieving parents to Hospice sometimes immediately after the loss of a child, but sometimes years later. They are delighted to now partner in providing this vital care not just for 2020, but as an annual commitment.

Parish Magazines
For those of you living in St Peter and St Saviour take a moment to read the Spring edition of your Parish Magazine that should be dropping on your doorstep anytime now. You should see a familiar face from Hospice and be able to read about their experiences of working at Hospice and how every gift we receive makes a difference.
Jay Morris Spinathon

For the last 18 years, Jay’s family have organised an annual Spinathon as a tribute to Jay, which has raised over £200,000 for Jersey Hospice Care over the years. This year the event, which was on 29th February, raised over £8,000 with 70 people taking part. Jenny Morris, Jay’s mum, said “Alan and I have been running this event for several years as a tribute to our son, who had a strong passion for cycling. The Spinathon is great for getting our community together in unity, to raise money for Jersey Hospice Care. It is so nice to see all the familiar faces once again this year.”  The support of Jay’s family and friends is always so overwhelming and very much appreciated.

Nicky and Mel go marathon mad again!
Having completing the hottest London Marathon on record in 2018 Nicky Parker and Mel Le Maistre have decided to give it another go! And once again they are raising money in aid of Hospice and hope to be able to run the marathon later this year. As part of their fundraising efforts, Nicky and Mel, supported by friends and family, had a fantastic collection date at the Co-op in St Peter earlier this month. They raised an amazing £412.55 thanks to the generosity of everyone who passed by them. What an amazing result!

Preloved to Reloved

We were delighted by the number of visitors we had to our pop-up shop at the Radisson at the end of February. Having received some amazing donations of high-end clothes, handbags, and shoes, the shop was crammed full on both Saturday and Sunday and we raised over £12,000 for Hospice that weekend. Thank you so much to everyone who was involved from shop staff and volunteers to donors and all of you who visited us.

Update on our services
Last week we suspended our day hospice services in the King Centre and our team have received additional core training and been redeployed on the In Patient Unit to support patients there. We have had to close the In Patient Unit to visitors (apart from in exceptional circumstances at the discretion of the nurse in charge) in order to minimise any risk to the patients and staff in the Unit. Our Community Team and Bereavement and Emotional Support service are continuing to support patients and their families with appointments held by phone wherever possible. And following the government’s requirement for social distancing, we took the decision on Friday to close our Hospice shop at Beau Pre in St Oeun following the closure of the town shop earlier in the week. Please note that we are not currently taking donated items for the shops.
