Sparkling with the SEQN Artist Showcase
CAA is currently showcasing artists from within the SEQN region each day on Instagram.
Artists from all practice areas have been invited to submit an image of their art, or of themselves practicing their artform, for CAA to curate and share on their feed. Through this showcase, CAA aim to build a sense of support and community through Instagram, while showcasing the diverse talent throughout the region.

As the name suggests, Young Mic is an open mic event for under 18's.
If you're a young musician, you are invited to join us from your lounge room, kitchen, garage or wherever you might be to share your music, connect with other young musicians and build your skills and confidence.

Supporting the Network
CAA, like many in the arts sector, are looking to how we can support our creative colleagues, continue to engage with our communities and reconsider our delivery approaches to keep progressing our creative projects.
Artists have always been at the forefront of change, the dreamers, the thinkers, the boundary pushers and so it is no surprise that even in these challenging times the arts sector is already looking for ways to respond and new ways practicing, learning, working and presenting.
CAA have compiled a resource list with up-to-date funding and financial assistance; fundraising campaigns and platforms; information and news; professional development opportunities; opportunities for artists; and ways to stay connected.

At CQRASN, supporting the well-being of the region's amazing communities is key and we are currently exploring what we can deliver online, what hands-on resources we can develop and who we can work with to achieve all of this.
In this regard, CQRASN would love to hear from you, the artists and arts organisations, from across our Central Queensland regions! Have you got an idea for an online arts activity or at home activity pack? Or maybe for an arts workshop, program, service or activity that you could deliver online?

When The Going Gets Tough
'Tough and Tender' is the signature project for the Central Queensland Regional Arts Services Network for 2020-21 and will profile the diversity of our regions, and the importance of the arts for creative response, resilience, recovery, memorialising and celebration.
A range of activities will take place over the next 15 months with a culmination weekend in June 2021. As Phase 1 of that project, we are inviting expressions of interest from artists/creative practitioners from diverse artforms to engage in a one-month residency ‘at home’.
We encourage participation by First Nations artists and artists of diverse backgrounds and ability.

Island Days
Cape York and Torres Strait Regional Arts Officer, Waratah Nicholls just managed a visit to Thursday Island a week before the COVID-19 shut down.
Aven Noah, Gallery Officer for Gab Titui (pictured) showed Waratah around the gallery. They talked about the Torres Strait artists represented there and the many challenges artists face, living on remote islands with little access to internet and materials, let alone training and exhibition opportunities. Under discussion also was strategies for the current challenge of COVID-19 and the effects that a shutdown would have on the gallery and it’s contributing artists, as well as future opportunities for the Arts in the Straits.

Art Online - Live
Responding to the new challenges that COVID-19 has presented to us, Cape York and Torres Strait Islands RASN Region is developing on-line arts skills workshops using re-purposed travel budget funds.
Art On Line - Live, presents the opportunity to develop skills and create art while living in isolation and will not only give people meaningful activity and a vehicle for self-expression in this difficult time, but will produce a body of new works encapsulating the story of this strange time.
Using the theme, ‘Art and Community Spirit’, regional artists are being contracted to deliver training and professional development workshops for people who are isolated due to COVID-19 in the region. Prospective participants are being asked which techniques and skills are of the most interest to them, after which the online workshop content will then focus on the skills requested by the majority of participants and mentoring them through the process of creating new works.
Cook Shire Council will contract skilled regional artists as workshop presenters, who will deliver these online workshops in several different artistic techniques and modalities, this will get money into the hands of these artists in this time of need. A studio is being set up in the Cooktown Library for those workshop presenters who don’t have the capacity to deliver these workshops from home. Attendees who register for the workshops, will be supplied art materials, free of charge and they will then be instructed through the Zoom hosted workshop, where they can view the on line sessions from their own home.
This project responds to the challenges of social isolation protocols as well as priorities identified in consultation with RASN and the region's arts and cultural sector, where the development of pathways for further education and employment in the cultural industries is recognised as one of the top challenges. Participants’ emotional, psychological and social well-being will also benefit from the positive, social interaction and creative stimulation in this time of stress and personal isolation.
The body of new work created will help CYP&TSI RASN artists and the local arts industry recover after this challenge has passed. CYP&TSI RASN region’s emerging artists will also have the opportunity to connect with each other, build relationships, gain and share knowledge through access to a virtual network created though this project.
With further investment we will be able to present an online exhibition and sales platform for the artworks produced after the isolation restrictions have been lifted, including a possible exhibition of artworks from this program to be presented at the re-imagined ‘Cooktown Expo 2020’, which will be a major regional event for 2021.

In a stunning tribute to the medical and support workers around the country fighting COVID-19, Empire Theatre via the talents of their exceptional Technical Team participated in #lightuniteaus, a nation wide initiative to thank and acknowledge Australia's hard working medical staff.

Bright, Young Sparks
In response to the closures and restrictions of COVID-19, NQ RASN has been putting together a number of online programs in partnership with various organisations across theatre, music and the visual arts.
Key among them is our work with Umbrella Studio of Contemporary Arts in two online projects:
North Queensland Downloadable Kid Colour-in Book
Umbrella will commission 10 early career/emerging North Queensland artists to create artwork with a local flavour. For example, artists like Jasper Reading who participated in our budding artist mentor program in 2018 will create outlines of his first nations superheroes for colouring in.
At Home Artists in Residence Program
Inspired by a Finnish art organisation we will create an 'at home' artist in residence program. North Queensland artists will be invited to apply to do a two week artist residency from their homes (or studios). Umbrella will provide a $1000 fee to three artists to support creative development time on a new body of work. The selected artists will document their residency for Umbrella to share on our social media platforms. The artists will propose an online public program which might take the form of an artist talk or a workshop as an outcome to engage local audiences in their arts practice.
NQ Young Write Sparks 101
NQ Young Write Sparks 101, a collab between Jute Theatre, NQ RASN and Full Throttle Theatre Company is a writing program for aspiring playwrights aged 14-17. The invitation for this has been extended to our fellow RASN in the Cape York and Torres Straits. |

Sending Out an SOS
The Australian Music Industry is Sending Out an SOS.
In response to shutdowns and lockdowns restricting the abilities and impact of the live music industry, a music industry taskforce made up of radio stations, including triple j, record labels, tech companies, government groups and promoters have announced a new initiative called Sound of Silence.
The aim is to help keep support streams alive for artists you love during the lockdown of live music brought about by the coronavirus outbreak. |

Flying High with UMI
The rich diversity and artistic talent of UMI Arts’ emerging and established artist members was celebrated last month at the opening of the organisation’s annual 'You and Me' exhibition.
This exhibition is the first event to open the yearlong program of events and exhibitions dedicated to celebrating the 15th anniversary of UMI Arts. Each artwork presented by emerging and mid-career artists showcases various unique styles, inspirations and medium of choice. The exhibit also honours some artists who have recently passed away but had been active contributors to UMI Arts exhibition and workshop programs since 2005.
Artworks included work by Shane Dhuga Gibson exhibiting a work titled ‘Dawaar Mulithin’ that depicts the dense cluster of Dawaar (stars) in Mulithin (Milky Way) that is a pathway for ancestral spirits.
‘Ghunbi (blood)’ is a colourful work by familiar artist Harold Bowen with his signature contemporary gestural style. The work references traditional Guugu Yimithirr lore, where visitors to Waymburr, (Cooktown) were greeted with the Ngalangundaama ritual (drawing sweat from armpits and blowing sweat from hands into the air) which proclaimed that no ghunbi (banbi) was to be spilt on that land as a gesture of reconciliation.
UMI Arts’ You and Me' curator, Trish Barnard, said a highlight of this year’s exhibition is the inclusion of kites that were created by Indigenous artists as part of the city’s Chinese New Year Kite Project.
“These kites are not just beautiful – they also symbolise the long-time, shared history between First Nation people and Chinese immigrants. Despite being an Australian invention, the box kites provided the perfect shape for designs depicting birds, fish and butterflies of cultural significance to both Chinese Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people,” Ms Barnard said.
According to Ms Barnard, five artists contributed to creating designs from selected templates that resonated with their culture.
This project was an opportunity for emerging artists like Chanté Leopold – an Angkamuthi woman with Saibai and Erub Island heritage, Chanté found inspiration in the beauty of the migratory Rainbow bee-eater (Merops ornatus) that migrates north over land and sea to the Torres Strait Islands during winter. The exhibition also features a kite by experienced textile and surface designer for furnishings, artist Francoise Lane who produced a repeat pattern for her box kite that was inspired by the colours of kaiar (pronounced kai-arr), the painted crayfish (Panulirus ornatus) that inhabits the tropical waters of her Torres Strait homelands.

Introducing Topology's award-winning education program delivered virtually!
Top Up Online provides remote access to training with Topology's Principal Artists and expert pool of instructors in the areas of music, composition, improvisation and instrumental performance. Participants can apply for workshops as an individual, a classroom, or an ensemble/club, delivered online via video-conferencing (Zoom).
This pilot project is part of a transition to online platforms for the Top Up education program - ensuring that aspiring composers, young people and teachers in regional communities get the inspiration and support they need.

C'mon and Slam!
The Bunker Spoken Word is a Queensland based spoken word series produced by Writers Republic with support from Horizon Arts Festival and the Sunshine Coast Council through the Regional Arts Development Fund.
Through a series of initiatives including workshops, bi-monthly events and 'Bunker Down, Speak Out' (a monthly online poetry slam with feature poet and $50 cash prize) among others, they are committed to supporting artists though paid opportunities, building the south-east Queensland community of spoken word audiences, and delivering world class digital content to all.

Loris Williams Memorial Scholarship

The ASA offers an annual Loris Williams Memorial Scholarship for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students studying in archives and records at either university (undergraduate or postgraduate) or at vocational education and training institutions (from Certificate III onwards). The scholarship provides $3000 to go towards fees, books and computing costs, a year-long ASA student membership, and a mentor to help guide career development.

The 2020 Resilience Fund is designed to provide emergency relief to support the livelihoods, practice and operations of Australian artists, groups and organisations during the COVID-19 pandemic.
This funding can be combined with relief offered by other arts funding agencies, government departments, support services and philanthropy.

QMusic Connect
Introducing QMusic’s free series of online workshops called QMUSIC CONNECT supporting and upskilling Queensland's music industry.
Featuring industry leaders and professionals in online panel discussions and masterclasses, the program will be delivered in three stages over the next six months.
The first six sessions will be immediate response discussions with the COVID-19 Crisis Talks followed by targeted regional community discussions and QMUSIC CONNECT: The Masterclass Series.
The QMUSIC CONNECT program is free and accessible via the QMusic Facebook Page.
