09 APRIL 2020

First of all, I hope that this message finds you well and healthy. As the effects of COVID-19 are being felt in nearly every corner of the globe and in nearly every aspect of our lives, this crisis further underscores the need to invest in local waste management and recycling value chains to protect local communities’ health and livelihoods.

Some of its impacts include an increase in demand for single-use plastics as well as an increased likelihood that the virus will affect the front lines of workers in the waste management sector, especially among the informal waste pickers in South and Southeast Asia. This is why we are supporting the call to action for support to waste picker families in the great Jakarta area described below.

We are more focused than ever in investing in small and medium enterprises across South and Southeast Asia to strengthen the resilience of the local value chains and communities they operate in and to ensure the continued emergence of a circular economy.

NEWS FROM THE FIELD
Sustainable Waste Indonesia (SWI), Indonesia Waste Pickers Union (IPI) and the Indonesian Plastic Recycler association (IPR) launched a call to action for Covid-19 support to waste picker families in the greater Jakarta area.

In coordination with Circulate Capital and thanks to the support of several of our investors including Unilever, Danone, Coca Cola and Dow as well as USAID, over 2000 waste picker families received essential hygiene toolkits including disinfecting agents, handwash, masks and gloves - with hand wash stations installed across six slum areas.

Efforts continue, please reach out if you want to contribute to this initiative.
