News You Can Use

COVID-19 Emergency Legislation

The Council unanimously passed a consensus emergency bill in response to the COVID epidemic currently impacting the District and the nation.

This second piece of legislation makes some important changes including protections for youth aging out of foster care, a waiver of seat time and community service hours for graduating seniors and some key housing protections.

However, it left out important unemployment protections for those who work in the informal cash-economy (undocumented or otherwise) and are unable to access traditional unemployment,  and it struck a grant program designed to stabilize early childhood programs.

We are closely monitoring this situation and remain optimistic that the Mayor and Council will resolve these big gaps in our current safety net and recovery systems.

REMINDER: BUDGET ADVOCACY ALL CALL

Why this call matters:
Due to recent revenue decreases and increased expenses resulting from COVID-19, DC is now projecting a budget shortfall that could be anywhere between $300 million and $600 million for this year.

There are concerns we are going to face similar revenue reductions and emergency spending pressures well into the 2021 fiscal year (starting in October).

We need to be able to quickly modify our FY21 budget requests and advocacy strategies to respond to these changes circumstances. Which is why we are hosting this Advocacy All Call.

What this call will cover:
  • What we're hearing for the FY21 budget forecast and changes to the FY21 budget formulation process
  • High level recommendations on changes to our budget asks and strategies
  • Additional budget priorities and,
  • Next steps and advocacy opportunities: How you can get involved and help take the lead!
