 AmLight Express and Protect demonstrates the utility of the collaborative initiative to connect South Africa via AmLight-SACS

On March 1, 2020, we announced AmLight Express and Protect interconnects three continents by activating 100G end-to-end links between the U.S., Brazil and South Africa. Now this Research & Education networking advancement is showing it’s worth. The West African Cable System (WACS) suffered a significant fiber cut on Friday, March 27, at the worst possible time for South Africa. Currently, people are relying heavily on the Internet for work and communication in general during a three-week national lockdown. The cut is between Portugal and the UK. The AmLight-SACS project (NSF OCI-1937344) is successfully utilizing a 100G pathway using the South Atlantic Cable System (SACS) and West African Cable System (WACS) at the Angola connection point, to connect Africa from ZAOXI open exchange point in Cape Town, South Africa to the AmLight-ExP network in Fortaleza, Brazil to the United States at the AMPATH Open Exchange Point in Miami, Florida and to all of the Western Hemisphere. Furthermore, traffic destined for the UK, other points in Europe can be routed across the North Atlantic once it reaches AMPATH.  CENIC Recognizes Mexico's CUDI Network & Carlos Casasús

In recognition of the growing, innovative collaboration between Mexico’s research and education network, the Corporación Universitaria para el Desarrollo de Internet (CUDI), and CENIC’s California Research and Education Network (CalREN), CUDI and the individual who has led CUDI since its inception, Carlos Casasús, are being awarded the CENIC 2020 Innovations in Networking Award for R&E Network Partner. The CENIC Innovations in Networking Awards recognize exemplary people, projects, and organizations that leverage high-bandwidth networking.
While the collaboration between CENIC and CUDI has spanned many years, the work has deepened and broadened under the leadership of Casasús, CUDI Director General, and key members of his team. Florida International University (FIU), Rede Nacional de Ensino e Pesquisa (RNP), Tertiary Education and Research Network of South Africa and South African National Research Network (TENET/SANReN), and Angola Cables are pleased to announce the activation of lightpaths initially provisioned at 100Gbps linking North America, South America, and Africa for research and education. The Americas Africa Research and eduCation Lightpaths (AARCLight) project (NSF OAC-1638990) provided support for a grant to plan, design, and define a strategy for high-capacity research and education network connectivity between the U.S., Brazil, and West, Central and Southern Africa. The study indicated a high level of enthusiasm to engage in collaborative research among the U.S., Brazil and the African communities.  First national US observatory to be named after a woman!

The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope will now be called the NSF Vera C. Rubin Observatory, making it the first national U.S. observatory to be named after a female astronomer. Announced at the 2020 American Astronomical Society winter meeting, the name recognizes the role Rubin played in better understanding dark matter, which will be one of the observatory survey’s four main themes. “Named after an astronomer who provided important evidence of the existence of dark matter, the NSF Vera C. Rubin Observatory seems destined to make science history with its extraordinary capabilities that will come to bear in the next few years,” said France Córdova, National Science Foundation director. “Congress has helped make this inspiring commemoration a reality. The Rubin Observatory is expected to significantly advance what we know about dark matter and dark energy, so the Rubin name will have yet another way to inspire women and men eager to investigate.” ... [Important UPDATE] South American Astronomy Coordination Committee (SAACC) Meeting April 21-22, 2020
The AmLight SAACC meeting will be virtual due to the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions. The decision has been made out of an abundance of caution with the health and well-being of our guests and community in mind. CIARA/FIU will support virtual participation through ZOOM.
