Project Update | Natural Areas Conservation

Greenways is heavily involved in supporting long-term ecological monitoring through our Natural Areas Conservation program.  From building new nest boxes for the successful purple martin restoration project in the Campbell River Estuary, to keeping track of Canada geese, to supporting the Simms Creek fish fence program, Natural Areas Conservation allows us to track how species are doing locally, and both provide this information to others, as well as use it to guide our own projects.

THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS

We acknowledge the financial support of the Province of BC Community Gaming Grants and the City of Campbell River for their ongoing support of the Natural Areas Conservation program.

Interpretive Walks going Virtual | May 2020

The outdoor classroom on our indoor screens - One of the Greenways staff had a blast last week, jumping into her gumboots to meet with the first interviewee, Carl Morrison [Ministry of Forests], in the Beaver Lodge. Together they visited a wildlife camera site that's set up at a beaver pond [see picture of 'really happy bear' below]. She came home amazed by what she learned and we can't wait to sort the gathered materials, edit and share the story with your screen later this month.

The pleasures a beaver pond brings to the neighborhood! A bear having fun dipping into a beaver-built pond close to the Butterfly Trail in the Beaver Lodge Forest Lands. Be Part of the Change | Get Involved

If you are interested in volunteering with Greenways, please e-mail us at volunteer@greenwaystrust.ca or give us a call 250-287-3785. We are all working from our homes until further notice. Volunteers are needed for:

  • Greenways Conservation Team
  • Streamkeeping [Nunns, Woods, Simms, Willow, Haig-Brown Kingfisher & Detweiler Creek]
  • Mountain View Community Food Forest

Together @ Home | Homies 2.0

The Greenways team is virtually in good spirits - as you can see we have parked our gumboots for the time being and have hopped into our slippers at home. Cynthia is holding the fort at the office, not sure about the involvement of slippers there.

We are missing our group outings and work parties with the students, teachers and other volunteers. That said, we are still getting a lot of project work done as planned, we have lots of new adventures in the planning and overall we're adjusting well to the new circumstances. We've got some great activities for our volunteers to take on in their own time - email us at volunteer@greenwaystrust.ca if you'd like to get involved!

This year will be a special one - check out our Annual Report 2018/19 to see what we're building on.
