We're making time to celebrate! Will you join us?

Things have been ever-changing and slightly (or mostly) chaotic these past four weeks. We could not have imagined that many of us would be offering our youth programs virtually.  At Fab Youth Philly, we could not have made the move with out the dedication, flexibility and can-do-attitude of our youth workers.

Join us in thanking Afterschool Professionals who make a positive impact on the lives of young people, during Afterschool Professionals Appreciation Week from April 20-24.  Show us how you're celebrating by using the hashtag #HeartOfAfterschool

Guess who!
For this week's team meeting, I asked staff to share with me a photo of them self from childhood/adolescence so we could start the meeting playing a little 'guess who' game. It's been important for me as the team leader to remember that not everything is about project updates. It IS about staying connected with the people I trust, respect and care for. I'm working to build time in each week for connecting. After all, to CONNECT is at the core of our work.

A twist on this activity could be for your next virtual meeting to ask everyone replace their profile photo with a pic of them self from childhood. Then before moving to video, take everyone off mute and ask them to "guess who".  Let us know if you try it or take it in a different direction!
Resources for Virtual Professional Development for you and your staff

On Thursday, April 9th we held a virtual Sandbox gathering focusing on resources for virtual professional development for youth development professionals, which we recorded. We're sharing the link to the video recording. Feel free to use and watch with staff.  And we're sharing the PowerPoints and other resources we referenced in the session. Note the video starts about 5 min after the meeting started, during which time we conducted introductions and I reviewed the two goals: to connect with each other and review PD resources.

If you or your organization is interested in connecting for some support to help in designing or facilitating PD, please reach out. We'd love to help.

If you work with teens, this graphic is for you

For those of you working with or who have a teen(s) in your life, you may be witnessing some of these behaviors. Remember, they are a symptom or an expression of feelings they are experiencing. Try to acknowledge the feelings and create space for nonjudgmental conversation, If you can, without making the conversation about you, share how you're feeling and if you can pin point any behaviors connected to those feelings (e.g., overeating, not eating enough, binge watching the news, sleeping a lot). Teens are at a pivotal time in their development, and it's being disrupted in profound ways. It will take some time for them to regain their footing and they are going to need your support, guidance, and reassurance that their feelings are valid.

Remember: We keep updating our virtual guide for teens

Please share this resource  with the teens in your life. For those looking for meaningful things to do with their time at home and/or for those looking to create some structure in their days, these activities meet the various developmental needs of youth ages 14-19. We update this weekly so be sure to come back to it for new resources.

This week we've added resources for ENTREPRENEURSHIP and TedTalks by teens.

We're looking for a little guidance as we embark an a new project! We're developing a series of children's books about the Play Captains, with the goal of distributing them on the Play Streets and in the early childhood centers.
Do we know anyone who has self-published a book, ideally a children's book? If so, could you reach out to us, or connect us with someone if you can?
We'd love to be able to ask a few questions.
