In times of emergency, we link arms with our partners like Transport Oakland, Bike East Bay, TransForm, and neighborhood leaders to get rolling to help our communities the best way we can.
We are distributing message boards (like the one above) and flyers to help people stay physically and mentally health in their neighborhood streets during shelter-in-place. Sign up to help in the coming weeks via this Bike East Bay form.

Become a WOBO Member today with just the click of a button! Starting at $35 per year, you get a team of policy, community and advocacy champions who will stump for safe and accessible walking and bicycling in Oakland for all.
While Oakland is sheltering in place there are more people outside than usual: children playing, adults walking for exercise, cyclists headed to the grocery store. Don't let the reduced auto traffic fool you: speeding is still a problem, and with more folks outside the risk of pedestrians and cyclists being injured by cars only increases.
Whether you're driving or walking, please be on the lookout for people in unaccustomed places.
We're continuing our behind-the-scenes advocacy for
Slowing car traffic now there are more people now on the streets (see article below
Urging the City to disable manually-activated crossing signals (aka "beg buttons") in favor of having them on all the time, as well as implement 4-way stops at high-use crossings
Lobbying to increase the footprint of walkable/bikeable spaces in popular destinations (parks, the Lake, etc.)
Another way to help is by pledging to drive slower via WOBO's Slow Oakland campaign and urging five of your friends or neighbors to do the same - use the button below to register your support. Let's make this period of adjustment a safe one for everyone in the city by watching out for each other on its streets!
From the League of American Bicyclists: "This National Bike Month will necessarily be different. With less focus on biking to work, we’re going to focus on riding 'there' whether 'there' is to the grocer for essentials or to the creek and back with the kids. Already, we are seeing so many people rediscovering the joy of getting outside on a bike. Let’s use National Bike Month to celebrate what joy we have, the physical and mental well-being biking brings us, and the humble bicycle that unites us all, even as we must stay apart and at home."
BIKE TO WORK DAY HAS BEEN MOVED TO SEPTEMBER 24! DETAILS HERE.
HOW WOBO MEMBERS CAN HELP DURING THIS TIME
If you've been wondering what you can do to make a difference during the COVID-19 quarantine, here are a few suggestions:
When walking, observe a 6-foot distance as the sidewalk width permits
Keep sidewalks, crosswalks and curb cutouts clear of obstacles to wheelchairs and other mobility-aid devices
Share your short videos of walks on Instagram and show off your Oakland to everyone! Please tag WOBO with @walkoakbikeoak on these posts on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.
#OaklandSlowStreets
You can also submit your photos and videos of the Oakland you love for use on WOBO's social media. Please contact us for more details.
Block the walk? Please don't.
