THE LATEST INFORMATION FROM THE EXPERTS IN BASEBALL

Research by the ASMI and others points to FOUR principal risk factors for injury to youth baseball pitchers: overuse (number of pitches during a game, season, and a year), poor pitching mechanics, and poor physical fitness/physical conditioning.

  1. Overuse: Most baseball arm injuries are not the result of a single traumatic event. Instead, these injuries are typically due to the cumulative stress and repetitive trauma during the act of pitching. Overuse occurs throughout the course of a single game, season, or year in the developing baseball player.
  2. Poor pitching mechanics: The number one risk factor for elbow injuries (namely the UCL or Tommy-John injury) in baseball is having poor mechanics.
  3. Poor physical fitness/physical conditioning
  4. Previous injury to the medial elbow (specifically little league elbow): Recently Dr. Ahmad, doctor for the NY Yankees, discovered that a MLB player was more likely to have a UCL injury if they had a previous injury to their elbow (specifically little league elbow) as a youth player.

UPDATE
Make sure to follow us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/GopherStateBaseball/ for updates from our new series we call Gopher State At Home Baseball. Since you cannot get out to play baseball, we want to bring the baseball to you. As the days go on, we will add more and more videos, live events, etc. to this series so be sure to like us so you do not miss out.

Our newest Gopher State At Home Video focuses on catching drills and you can find the direct link here: https://www.facebook.com/GopherStateBaseball/videos/2318807788419674/

The Gopher State Baseball League recently released the league start date for 9u-15u teams of May 18th. This league start date follows the April 30th national social distancing guidelines. Our hope is that this gives teams time to practice prior to the start of the season.  In an effort to align the state in order to build a better state of baseball, we have mirrored the start date with the other large traveling league in the Minnesota . More info to follow.

We are allowing any GSTC Qualifiers scheduled prior to the May 15-17 weekend to be rescheduled to a later date and keep their GSTC Qualifier status. If your tournament is scheduled on the May 15-17 weekend and your community is no longer allowing it to run please contact me immediately. Our thought as of now is that the May 15-17 weekend will be able to hold tournaments.

MYAS and Trusted Coaches welcomes Sean Jensen as a Contributor

MYAS and TC coaches, parents, and partners: My name is Sean Jensen, and I originally moved to Minnesota in 1999 to cover the Minnesota Vikings for the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

When he hired me, my sports editor told me, “Sean, you’ll be here two years tops.” He expected me to leave the paper for ESPN or the New York Times. I was fortunate to get interviewed at both places within a year, but the Pioneer Press treated me great, I loved covering the Vikings, and I enjoyed Minnesota.

Fast forward 21 years, and I’m still here!

I am excited to partner with MYAS and TC  to share some stories, lessons and interviews with all of you. Do not hesitate to email me with any questions!
