Greetings to all supporters, researchers and other participants in GPI activities,

We wanted to reach out to you in these unprecedented times of Covid-19 and tell you how the GPI is currently operating and what we can and cannot do for you.

As of 16 March 2020, the GPI has been closed to the public and will remain so until further notice. We cannot take appointment bookings and have contacted all individuals and groups that were due to visit in the coming weeks. Regrettably, all workshops and events have been cancelled or postponed. Where possible, we will try and reschedule for later in the year. We are continuing with our enquiry service as best we can and our email is being monitored daily, so please contact us on info@georgepadmoreinstitute.org if you have a query.

Our online archive catalogues remain accessible via the Visit Archive Catalogue link (top right of our website Home page). These catalogues include overviews and background essays on all of our collections or you can carry out detailed searches of the materials.

All our staff are now working from home and there is plenty to do, including catching up on all those unfinished jobs that there never seems to be enough time for. We are also discussing possible projects under lockdown but it is too early as yet to make definite plans.

However, we are very aware that these are stressful times and we all need to set boundaries of work and life while we are at home.

We shall return to the financial implications of this shutdown in a separate notice. Meanwhile, the GPI is always grateful for any donations, large or small, which can be made through this Paypal link; or by bank transfer [Sort code 20-46-57; Acc. no: 00004642]; or by sending a cheque addressed to the George Padmore Institute, 76 Stroud Green Road, London N4 3EN, UK.

Please keep in touch via our website, and don't forget to follow us on social media.  Our Instagram account regularly features items from the GPI collections, including the Julian Stapleton photograph at the top of this email, and the below image from 1980s publication Soul Underground

We hope you remain in good health and we look forward to welcoming you again to the GPI in due course.
