The News: Australia's GDP Growth Hits a Decade Low

Australia’s economic growth slowed to a decade low last quarter. GDP figures on Wednesday showed the A$1.9 trillion economy grew 0.4% in the three months ended March, double the 0.2% clocked in the fourth quarter but below expectations for a 0.5% increase. CommSec chief economist Craig James remarked that the Australian economy has “lost momentum”, and that “soft consumer spending is the main culprit”.

Australian authorities have taken some measures, such as easing lending standards for mortgage borrowers and increasing the minimum wage for low-income earners by 3%. However, further monetary and fiscal stimulus is needed to prevent the nation from falling into recession.

Dealing with Isolation

As many of you guys are coping through the coronavirus, we are all vulnerable to isolation and loneliness. Due to the new social distancing rules, it has become apparent that going outside every day of the week has become difficult for all of us. So some may ask, how would you cope with this?

There are many ways to do this, including:

  • Following a moderate amount of the media and news, as an excessive amount would lead to feelings of paranoia and panic
  • Maintaining a sense of community. This can be done by regularly saying hello to your neighbours, calling/video calling your family and friends.
  • If support is needed there are many support services that you can contact such Beyond Blue (1300 22 4636) where they have implemented a system specifically designed for those who are experiencing loneliness as a result of the coronavirus.

All of us at AccSoc sincerely hope that we can all cope through these hard times and most importantly of all, know that you are not alone ✌️

- Why you joined AccSoc
I joined AccSoc as a third-year student, having attended some of the workshops in my first and second year. I was surprised to see that these events were insightful and applicable to all commerce majors and not just accounting students. My time in AccSoc has really allowed me to develop as a person by being surrounded by and learning from highly motivated individuals. Together, our supportive team is so passionate to see all members grow.
