Dear <<First Name>>,

Thank you so much for taking time to read the news below. We trust you are all coping well with the social isolation and keeping healthy. Our hearts and our prayers go out to all those who have been affected by the coronavirus. We echo Jesus' words in Jn 14.1: "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me."

Sponsor a verse

Daniel Davies, our CEO of TWFTW UK, will soon be launching a sponsor-a-verse project. His wife, Beth, has created a number of background designs for you to be able to choose from on which your favourite scripture verse can be printed. There will be various language groups that you can choose to support e.g. the Ngoni people in Tanzania, Africa (artwork as shown).

People profiles of each of these language groups will also be available so you can get to know the people group you wish to sponsor. We will send news updates on the progress of the translation work and the impact the scriptures are having in the people group.

The Danu people of Myanmar have recently begun to translate the Bible for their own people. One of our sponsors of the Danu project chose Jn 3.16 as their favourite verse. It has been translated into the Danu language as can be seen below. Please click here to read a one page people profile on the Danu people.

Please join us in praise for:

  • All the doctors, nurses and medical staff who are bravely working on our behalf to save lives in hospitals and clinics across the world.
  • We are grateful for our translators and local exegetes who are still able to continue their work at home in our 140 projects.
  • For the internet as we can work with some teams using Skype and translation software like Paratext to continue our consultation efforts. Barry was able to complete checking Leviticus, Joel and Amos with the Roma team in Slovakia this week.
  •  A week long international consultants' conference was supposed to be held in Ireland at the end of March, but had to be cancelled. Thankfully, due to internet software, Barry and all the other 20 delegates from the USA, Europe, Africa and SE Asia were able to attend the conference online in their own homes.

New local Consultants

TWFTW has always had a passion to train and develop nationals, but this has never been more evident than now in the Coronavirus lockdown. Many countries are closing their borders to foreigners and also not renewing work visas, as happened in SE Asia. Our desire to train national consultants has proven beneficial in East Africa too.

Dr Kamande came to work with Barry Funnell for a second time in Tanzania as we consultant checked Exodus with the Ngoni and Yao teams (see photo below). Dr Kamande has a PhD in Bible translation, and as he comes from Kenya, is fluent in Swahili. After this trip and having orientated him on our method of checking translations of several languages simultaneously, he has now been recognised by TWFTW as an international consultant.

The three people sitting next to Barry in the photo above are John, Dr Kamande and Raymond. John and Raymond are Tanzanian consultants-in-training and are currenty doing an MA in Bible translation in Kenya. Dr Kamande is one of their lecturers. Dr Kamande and Barry will continue to mentor them, and they will soon be qualified as local consultants. Then they will be able to work independantly in Tanzania. We have 26 projects in Tanzania and are starting work soon in Uganda; both are Swahili speaking countries.

Please pray with us for:

  • Comfort for Daphne and Ken, a board member of TWFTW UK, whose son died recently in the Bedford hospital due to coronavirus.
  • 20 translators and some leaders of TWFTW in SE Asia who were attending a training session have not been allowed to travel home due to the recent social isolation laws. Pray they will soon get home to their families.
  • Regine, our Director of Training, is in Germany caring for her very sick father.
  • Let us pray against the spread of coronavirus, that it will not affect our donors and translators, and that people will turn to Christ during this world crisis.
  • There have been attacks in northern Nigeria and some of our translators had to flee their homes. Pray that they can return safely and continue on their translations.

Example in Sena, Malawi

More news on how you can "sponsor-a-verse" will follow in our future news and prayer updates!
