Donors & Friends -

We are writing to provide an update on how Ameena Centre staff and families are doing in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. As you read this, we pray that you and your loved ones are healthy and safe.

Kenyan schools are regularly closed in April for fall break, and Ameena Centre school has been closed since March 15 in response to President Uhuru Kenyatta’s closure of schools nationwide. In addition, a national shelter in place order and broad travel restrictions have been imposed. Authorities are taking social distancing seriously and using extreme means like tear gas in the local market to enforce restrictions.

Due to your generous support, Ameena Centre staff has been fully paid during the closure and will be paid through the planned holiday.

More than ever, the families of Kiang’ombe rely on the hope that Ameena Project brings to their community. While the government’s restrictions on school operations and curfews prevent our staff from preparing or serving meals, we are working to source emergency food and distribute it to the 100 families we serve – nearly 300 people.

Might you consider making a special one-time donation, increasing your monthly gift, or asking others to join you during this time of extreme need? We recently added a “Manage Recurring Donations” feature at HELP NOW in the top right corner of https://ameenaproject.org/ to enable you to increase or modify your monthly gift.

Another way to show support: if you are an Oregonian and we’ve given you BottleDrop stickers, don’t forget to drop off your blue bags at open BottleDrop locations (they remain open during the Stay Home, Stay Safe order). Let us know if you need more stickers & bags.

In this time of uncertainty, we hold onto our mission to serve the vulnerable children and families of Kiang’ombe and offer them nourishment, education, and hope. We are forever grateful for your financial and moral support that makes this mission come alive.

We would love to hear how you are doing in this trying time. Please email us with your updates, feedback and questions at info@ameenaproject.org

With gratitude,

Anne, Ian, Shari & Tia

Update on Ameena Centre Director Mercy

While it’s difficult to conceive of additional stress right now, we are also compelled to ask for your continued prayers and support to our school director Mercy Mukhwana after the sudden death of her husband, Eric, last month. Mercy and her two sons continue to need support, especially in this economic downturn. We invite you to contribute to the GoFundMe account we established for their family.
