“Look on every exit as being an entrance somewhere else.” ~ Tom Stoppard

First, I hope that all readers of this weekly post are healthy and not affected directly by this coronavirus.

Folk singers and songwriters have given us many songs that others made famous, such as Ewan McColl’s love song “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” that became a big hit for Roberta Flack.

They’re even more readily associated with social observation and commentary. In this regard, Pete Seeger’s work springs to mind.

What would Forrest Gump say?

During this lockdown period, as a family, we watch a movie each Thursday evening with our youngest daughters. This week we watched Forrest Gump. Seeing the film again after all these years and the way Gump finds himself in the middle of major world events of the 50s, 60s & 70s got me thinking about what’s happening right now. How would Forrest Gump describe these events sitting on his park bench? What role would he play in them?

Turn, Turn, Turn

The movie features the Pete Seeger song "Turn Turn Turn" (To Everything There Is a Season) that was made famous by the Byrds. Most of the lyrics are actually attributed to King Solomon and appear in the Book of Ecclesiastes. Seeger just wrote the melody and added some lines about world peace.

They struck me as relevant to our current time and maybe provide some reassurance that there may indeed be a time for everything and that this will pass.

I share them here for reflection…

To everything (turn, turn, turn)
There is a season (turn, turn, turn)
And a time to every purpose, under heaven

A time to be born, a time to die
A time to plant, a time to reap
A time to kill, a time to heal
A time to laugh, a time to weep

To everything (turn, turn, turn)
There is a season (turn, turn, turn)
And a time to every purpose, under heaven

A time to build up, a time to break down
A time to dance, a time to mourn
A time to cast away stones, a time to gather stones together

To everything (turn, turn, turn)
There is a season (turn, turn, turn)
And a time to every purpose, under heaven

A time of love, a time of hate
A time of war, a time of peace
A time you may embrace, a time to refrain from embracing

To everything (turn, turn, turn)
There is a season (turn, turn, turn)
And a time to every purpose, under heaven

A time to gain, a time to lose
A time to rend, a time to sew
A time for love, a time for hate
A time for peace, I swear it's not too late

May you know your time…

Gerry

Humour

Q: How do you weigh a millennial?
A: In Instagrams.

Jenny: I can tell if someone is lying just by looking at him.
Penny: Really?
Jenny: Yep. I can tell if he is standing too.

Q: What happened to the guy who sued over his missing luggage?
A: He lost his case.

A guy gets pulled over by a cop. The cop asks, “You’re speeding! Didn’t you see the speed limit sign?”
The man replied, “Yeah I saw the speed limit sign, but I didn’t see you.”
