Good Evening All You Cool Cats and Kittens,

As I'm sure you already know, we will not be returning back to CHS this school year. We are finishing up school online, so please continue making art at home. We miss you guys so much and wish we could be together in this crazy time. Our visual art community remains scattered across the land but we remain connected. We will keep updating everyone on Fridays and look forward to updates from all of you throughout the week. We are also going to continue to hold Brunch on Wednesdays from 10-11am. These are totally optional and have no agenda. We just want to be available for a chat if you feel like hanging out. I'll send out a Zoom link on Tuesday. This Wednesday, we got to see the amazing Jenna Stallcup feed her Ball Python 🐍. If the scheduled time does not work for you, please let me know and I will arrange something else.

Please make sure you are turning in evidence of your work to your class folders. Getting your work to us is critical in receiving the credit necessary in moving forward towards the next school year. I have just started noting weeks in Aeries, but I won't be redboxing anything until absolutely necessary. As always, please feel free to reach out to us if you have any concerns or questions. We are here for you.

Stay safe, stay home, and stay frosty,

HL & SR

Assignments during the CUSD closure:

Synchronous assignments:

I plan on doing one hour sessions five times a week. These are interactive sessions. Students can do one of these sessions per week (if they choose). These are for all art levels and are meant to be fun!

Asynchronous assignments:

Art 1: We have new projects for this week!!

  1. Grab some shoes and create a still-life! Draw your still-life using graphite pencil. You can use whatever paper that you have around the house. Try and create a composition that puts the viewer in a closed view of the subject matter. Meaning, trying to have information that reaches the edges of your paper. This is a value drawing so make sure you take your time and have a range in light and dark values. See the example below.

  1. Find a willing or unwilling subject matter and create some observational life studies of human feet. These are studies, so try and do multiple drawings on a page. Your drawings can overlap, they can be from multiple views and try to include some value shading as well. Please refer to the examples below.

AP Studio Art:

  1. Selected Works (SW) 40%: Students are required to submit 3 works for Selected Works, reduced from 5. The 3 submissions should be finished works of art that demonstrate the synthesis of materials, processes, and ideas. The works may come from the Sustained Investigation OR they may be works made outside of the Sustained Investigation.
  2. Sustained Investigation (SI) 60%: Students are required to submit 10 images for Sustained Investigation, reduced from 15. The Sustained Investigation is intended to provide students an opportunity to demonstrate their thinking-and-making process when creating works of art and design. The 10 submissions can be a combination of images of process documentation and more finished works of art.

Selected Works will be submitted and scored digitally, following the same process students will use for Sustained Investigation. Students will not mail or otherwise submit any physical artworks in 2020. You must include all the written evidence that accompanies each piece in this section. For your final: You must compile you work into a gSlide presentation including Artist Statement by May 15th.

Test date and time: The deadline for submission of artworks in the Digital Portfolio is extended to May 26, 11:59 pm ET. It is your choice and your responsibility to upload your works to AP if you so choose. Choosing not to complete your AP exam does not excuse you from submitting your final gSlide presentation to us. This is the current status on the portfolio submission. It may change in the future. We will keep you posted!

Art 2/3: Work on and finish your five to seven piece collection of work that is connected by a common idea or theme. Your work must be visually related and compelling. Submit your collection in a Google Slideshow with titles, mediums used, and sizes of each piece. Provide a brief artist statement describing your conceptual idea behind your pieces and how you worked through the process of creating it.

Photo & Graphic Design:
Watch this video about two of my favorites: Maurice Sendak discusses William Blake. Then, check out more works by Blake. After reviewing the slides, our art this week will focus on an exploration of substitution and distortion. All students will create works inspired by prompts from the artist Barbara Ess:
a) use the photograph as a window
b) use the photograph as a mirror
c) use the photograph as a mask
d) use the photograph as a substitute
e) use the photograph as a copy
f) use the photograph as a hiding place
Please incorporate TEXT in some way into at least 3 of your works. When finished, place them in a gSlide presentation or share them on ig with #chsartparty. Have fun!
