Happy New Year everyone!

Let's hope this year brings more happiness and health than the past nine months have done. We wish you all the very best for your family and friends.

We have been kept extremely busy with orders since March 2020 and we are now trying to catch up with all the jobs like weeding and propagating that we haven’t had time for. We're not complaining about any of it though, we are so thankful that you all supported us during lockdown. As well as our regulars, lots of new customers found us online and delighted in discovering how much solace they found in plants and gardening; something that plant lovers have known for a long time. Many of you have sent us photographs of the gardening projects you have undertaken and how much colour and pleasure the large variety of plants brought to the garden over the lockdown periods. Thank you for sharing your gardens with us.

Plants in the tunnel houses here on the nursery are cosy, and I love going in to see what is coming into growth and starting to flower. That’s the beauty of alpine plants, there is something coming into flower every month of the year.
Just two of the early flowering Narcissus are N. romieuxii  'Julia Jane' and N. romieuxii ssp. albidus, which are both such beautiful dwarf varieties; N. 'Julia Jane' with shining lemon cups and N. romiieuxii ssp. albidus with near-perfect white flowers. Not far behind will be Narcissus 'Spoirot' and N. hawera with equally delightful blooms. For a full range of our unusual dwarf daffodils take a look at the website.
The two early dwarf iris that we grow, Iris 'Katherine Hodgkin' and I. 'Katherines Gold', will soon be pushing up their flower buds and lifting the spirits on cold February mornings. To the best of our ability we try to make sure that there are flowering size bulbs in every pot we sell so that you get a good show of flowers when planted in the ground. However, if, like me, you prefer to grow them in terracotta pans so that you can raise them up on a bench or window ledge, they will be equally happy.
A few of the more unusual crocus that we offer are now coming into growth and will not be long before bursting into flower. These include Crocus serotinus salzmanii atropurpureusCrocus olivieri 'Orange Monarch' and Crocus korolkwii

Amazingly we already have Oxalis versicolor in flower and how delightful the candy cane flowers are at this time of year. Another oxalis which was new to the website last year and already covered in flowers is Oxalis nudilans 'Pom Pom' is an absolute delight.

And this month I cannot fail to mention corydalis, one of my favourite cormerous plants. It is such a worthwhile plant to have, all varieties are totally hardy and never fail to appear in late spring. They look after themselves without needing any attention and come in such a fantastic range of colours. Browse our full range on the website.
For those of you that like more exotic or delicate plants then take a look at our range of South African goodies. While a little more challenging, they are so worth the extra effort. We never have enough but are doing our best to increase our numbers and varieties with full cultural instructions. Keep an eye on the website as more outstanding varieties will appear throughout the year, gaining popularity they are soon snapped up.

One or two to mention are Lachenalia rubida and Lachenalia pallida. Lachenalia rubida has been flowering for about six weeks now and Romulea tetragona is about to burst into flower.

Of course I must also mention our beautiful range of gladioli including Gladiolus carneus, G. cunonius and the beautifully delicate G. miniatus, which are all coming into growth.

As our winters are becoming milder, people with coastal and sheltered gardens will find that a lot of these southern hemisphere plants do very well, however to enjoy many of them I would grow them in a glasshouse or alpine house.
Wishing you all a safe and wonderful plant-filled year ahead.
