Farm Tour Cancelled

June 6 Farm Visit Day cancelled this year.

We hope you and your family are safe and doing well during this weird and difficult time.  We have been waiting to make a final decision on our annual Farm Visit Day to see if circumstances were improved enough to go forward.  We really look forward to the opportunity to meet everyone and share our farm with you all and it is with great disappointment that we decided to call off the event.  However, in light of continuing risks and our desire to assure that everyone stay safe, we think this is the best decision. Group tours and children visiting the emu chicks are the highlight of the event and that would be so hard to do with appropriate social distance and sanitation.  We are sorry and we truly hope you will put us on your calendar for next year's event.  In the meantime, we are exploring ways to bring you some, gulp, virtual tours in lieu of an in person visit so you can still meet the emus and learn about what we do.  We are not photogenic and suffer from a glaring lack of technological savvy.  But, new challenges require learning new solutions.  More to come once we figure it out.

Here are some of our friends and customers from past years:

Farm Happenings...

Despite the cancellation, life on the farm goes on. We are in the midst of our annual chick hatching with several chicks in our brooder and in our grow out pens.  We still have more on the way in our incubators.  Only a few of the hens are still laying those big green eggs, so we are coming to the end of the laying season and are hoping to get at least one more tray of eggs into our incubator. The hatch is looking good so we should have a good group of chicks this year. We are,of course, repairing pens, getting the garden ready, and continuing a never ending battle, with the cows to keep them from escaping.  In addition, Emily and I have been roaming about looking for herbs and medicinal plants and if you follow us on facebook you know how excited we were to find stinging nettle that we have dried for tea!

Ground Emu, Leek, and Potato Soup

2-3 Tbsp olive oil
1 clove garlic
2-3 lbs ground emu
5-6 Leeks
1 small onion
5-6 potatoes
5-6 carrots (or other favorite veggies), optional
Cream (optional)
Salt and Pepper to taste

Mince garlic. Cut potatoes, leeks and onion into bite sized pieces.  Saute garlic, leeks and onion with olive oil for about 10 minutes until soft.  Brown emu in large sauce pan.  Add water, potatoes, and leeks&onion to the sauce pan.  (Add in carrots or any other of your favorite veggies.)  Simmer until potatoes are cooked--about 30 minutes. Season to taste.  Right before serving, I like to add some cream.  You can add a 1/2 cup or so into the whole pot, or just add a few spoons into each bowl as desired.
