LA IGLESIA DE NUESTRA SEÑORA DEL ROSARIO - TALPA

TALPA:  Surrounded by pine trees, Talpa is a pilgrimage city visited by millions of people every year. They come to pay tribute to Nuestra Señora del Rosario aka "La Chaparrita" ("The Short One"), who is believed to perform miracles.  One is needed.   After the Virgin of Guadalupe in Mexico City, this is the second most visited shrine by pilgrims in Mexico.

"LA CHAPARITTA" EN LA IGLESIA DE NUESTRA SEÑORA DEL ROSARIO

Most popular times to visit the church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario, where the statue is of la Chaparrita is displayed,  are on her birthday, October 7th and during Easter week.  Ten years ago, three million people made pilgrimages to Talpa at Easter.  La Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Rosario was closed to visitors when the clinic took place and will remain closed through Easter and until the government declares the coronavirus crisis over.

The drive from centro Vallarta to Talpa takes approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes.  The clinic took place at the local DIF (National System for Integral Family Development) offices and was organized by Laura Chavez-Halberg.  Local animal advocates raised 4,000 pesos for the out-of-town extra expenses of gasoline and driving time.  Breakfasts and lunches for vet team donated by DIF.  Talpa photos taken by Dr. Poli´s wife, Concha.

COLONIA LAS ARALIAS April 1-4

The clinic in las Aralias was a substitute for a cancelled Pets for Life clinic in the state of Nayarit.

PARQUE LOS SAUCES EN COLONIA LAS ARALIAS - CLÍNICA SIEMPRE ESTÁ ATRÁS EN LA BODEGA
 DE SOFI GONZALEZ

When I arrived Wednesday at 8 AM, there were just half-a-dozen people forming a generously spaced line.  The clinics in Las Aralias always take place in the open-air bodega of Sofi Gonazalez across from the the street from los sauces park, which is currently very empty.

A notice on the door to the bodega advised that anyone not observing the new rules, i.e., in line with personal space observed,  one person at a time inside clinic with pet, etc., would not be served.  This same notice was on view at Talpa clinic and will be on view for all future clinics until no more dangers from coronavirus exist.  Dr.Poli has been in touch with the Secretary of Health who confirms no plans to cancel spay/neuter clinics.

Most interesting sight at clinic:  A young woman in shorts with a tattoo of her black and white cat's face on her upper arm.  Scroll down to clinic schedule (red type) for photo.

DONATIONS TO PEACEANIMALS:
John Brooks - $35 US

Vallarta Adventures advised it would not be donating the monthly 5,000 pesos worth of vet supplies (8 months annually) until the financial impact of the coronavirus is over.  It has been a devastating blow for a small tourist city.

MUNDO RARO (STRANGE WORLD):

BOTANICAL GARDENS

On March 20th, the local government requested residents to "stay home" for five days.  It was just hours after friends and I had toured and lunched at the splendid Botanical Gardens.

On March 24, the Mexican government announced the initiation of phase two for COVID-19. The Gardens were ordered closed the same day.  On March 31st, Mexico declared itself in Phase Three.

MALECÓN - MARCH 30TH

Just three days earlier,  I had visited my family and their friends in Punta de Mita.  We spent the day at an almost completely empty beach club. On this brilliant, breezy blue day, there was a huge cluster of pelicans, boobies and terns feeding on sardines just beyond where  foam-crested waves were breaking.  In the distance and just for an instant, we watched the glorious white splash of a breaching humpback whale.  This dazzling spot seemed so very far away from COVID-19.  Three days later,  all beach clubs and the St. Regis hotel in Punta de Mita closed.

KUPURI BEACH CLUB - FOUR SEASONS - PUNTA DE MITA

On April 1st,  the following news was published by the public security department of the Puerto Vallarta City Council as a preventative measure re COVID 19:

EMPTY BEACHES - PHOTO CREDIT - CHRIS VIETOR

"By official provision and until further notice, the beaches, rivers, public squares and the malecón will be closed to the public."

Testing this the following day - it seems fine to do walks on the malecón and presumably on the beach.  In a comforting message to the public, the mayor announced there are 500 plots ready for burials - and for sale-  at 5,000 pesos each.  He failed to mention food banks and other positive news.  If you´d like to help:
