5 Updates for Farm Veggie Boxes
FAQ Summer 2020
FREE Delivery to your door - yes.
Contactless - yes.
Safety - yes.
Home Garden Support - yes.
Home Pantry Support - yes
Questions? 706-938-8829
Are food deliveries and groceries safe during pandemic? Yes, experts say. First, the good news: The virus is not likely to be transmitted by food itself.
1. FREE Delivery to your door - yes.
Farm Box CSA Delivery is Allowed. Source.
There are many exceptions to the “shelter in place” order, allowing residents to leave their homes. Those essential actions include obtaining groceries, medication, outdoor exercise and work-related responsibilities. Restaurants will also still be able to offer takeout and delivery services, but dine-in services must cease.
FREE contactless delivery to your outside door, with a courtesy text alert upon delivery.
2. Contactless-yes.
Online food delivery ‘one of the only winners’ in outbreak Source.
Contactless convenient deliveries assures your farm veggie box is left on a porch or at a doorstep. Please tape cash or check to front door or other. You receive a courtesy text alert when your farm veggie box has been delivered.
Crowds full of people that can cough or sneeze or spread their germs on grocery carts and checkout lines. That's part of why social distancing has been encouraged and part of the reason grocery box stores can be a problem.
3. Safety-yes.
The good news about food safety and coronavirus: It’s the same advice we’ve known all along. Source
UGA Center for Food Safety - Update on Farm Veggies
“There is a very slim chance or almost none that the virus is going to be present in the food. There is no evidence it is transmitted through fresh produce," he adds. Francisco Diez-Gonzalez, director of the Center for Food Safety at the University of Georgia. “We’re quickly trying to respond.” He notes a virologist is on staff gathering data specific to coronavirus.
Cook Food - to the proper temperature.
“The virus is very sensitive to cooking,” Diez-Gonzalez says. “Heat is going to kill it very easily.” Use a digital thermometer, and check against the government’s safe minimum cooking temperature chart. The transmission through foods is not possible if the foods are cooked properly since coronaviruses are inactivated by heat. Source.
Home Prep - Farm Veggie Safety
Wash your veggies, white vinegar rinse is optional.
Cleaning surfaces is also important. “As with any food safety measures, you should always wash your hands before, during, and after food preparation and before you eat any foods,” Ilic said. “Additionally, you should be sure to carefully wash any surfaces used for food preparation.” Source
The virus is NOT likely to be transmitted by food itself.
Are food deliveries and groceries safe during pandemic? Yes, experts say. First, the good news: The virus is not likely to be transmitted by food itself, said Dr. Ian Williams, chief of the Outbreak Response and Prevention Branch of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which investigates foodborne and waterborne illnesses.
Digestive Science - on Virus and our Windpipe
Even if the virus gets into your mouth, drinking water or other liquids will wash them down through your throat and into the stomach. Once there, your stomach acid will kill all the virus. If, however, virus enters your windpipe through nose or mouth and then into the lungs, that’s very dangerous. So, even if you did eat food with the virus, there are not many receptors in the digestive track for the virus to cling to, so swallowing the virus would not likely lead to contracting the illness. In other words, your digestive system would get rid of it, Williams said. Drink fresh water often.
Packaging - Whole Farm Foods
"While it's possible that the virus gets deposited [on packaging] we have no indication from epidemiology or the literature that this is a risk factor for Covid-19 or other respiratory illnesses," Chapman said. The US Food and Drug Administration echoed that sentiment, saying it's not aware of any reports suggesting Covid-19 can be transmitted by food or food packaging.
USDA - Farm Veggie Safety
Q: Are food products produced in the United States a risk for the spread of COVID-19?
- A: There is no evidence to suggest that food produced in the United States can transmit COVID-19.
Q: Can I become sick with coronavirus (COVID-19) from food?
- A: We are not aware of any reports at this time of human illnesses that suggest COVID-19 can be transmitted by food or food packaging. However, it is always important to follow good hygiene practices (i.e., wash hands and surfaces often, separate raw meat from other foods, cook to the right temperature, and refrigerate foods promptly) when handling or preparing foods.
Bottom Line - Whole Farm Veggie Food Safety
The bottom line, experts said, is that there is an extremely low risk of contracting coronavirus from the food supply.... Source

Immune
System
Our powerful immune system
fights off invaders including bacteria and viruses.
There appears to be a connection between nutrition and immunity.
The main parts of our immune system are:
white blood cells,
antibodies,
the complement system,
(30+ proteins synthesized by the liver)
the lymphatic system,
(lymph nodes, spleen, thymus and tonsils)
the spleen,
the thymus, and
the bone marrow.
Healthy ways to strengthen our immune system
Eat a diet high in fruits and vegetables.
Exercise regularly.
Maintain a healthy weight.
If you drink alcohol, drink only in moderation.
Get adequate sleep.
Take steps to avoid infection,
such as washing your hands frequently.
Micronutrient Malnutrition
There appears to be a connection between nutrition and immunity. Scientists have long recognized that people who are malnourished are more vulnerable to infectious diseases. A form of malnutrition that is surprisingly common even in affluent countries is known as "micronutrient malnutrition." Micronutrient malnutrition, in which a person is deficient in some essential vitamins and trace minerals that are obtained from or supplemented by diet.
Micronutrients have major impact on health
Foods to boost your immune system and increase vitamin and mineral intake.
Nearly 30 vitamins and minerals that your body cannot manufacture in sufficient amounts on its own are called "essential micronutrients."
In fact, the best way to get vitamins and minerals is from a well-rounded diet, with plenty of fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, lean sources of protein, healthy fats, such as coconut and olive oil.
Five micronutrients—vitamin B6, vitamin C, vitamin E, magnesium, and zinc—play roles in maintaining immune function, with Vitamin D3 and Vitamin A additionally vital.

AntiViral
Nourish
Lysine foods = antiviral
Arginine foods = cause viral immune challenge
Limiting SUGAR is essential to strengthening our immune system and speeding up recovery.
Sugar feeds all the bugs: viruses, bacteria, fungus, and parasites.
There are many foods that can flare-up or lengthen a viral immune challenge. These foods are high in an amino acid (a normal component of proteins) called Arginine, and usually low in an amino acid called Lysine.
FOODS TO AVOID, high in Arginine, cause viral immune challenge. Sugars, nuts, seeds, oats, grains, onions, brussels sprouts, and corn. Virus enablers: whole wheat, oats, sunflower seeds, sugar of any sort, juices, honey, grains, brown rice, almond, almond butter, almond milk, peanuts, peanut butter, chocolate, dairy, split peas, nuts, coconut milk.
HEALTHY FOOD LIST TO ENJOY: Lysine supplements, most veggies, eggs, all meats, seafood, lemon, cranberry and more.. Virus Fighters: turkey, seafood, veggies, eggs, potatoes, avocado, lemon, lime, cranberries, coconut oil
Certain foods have antiviral properties — kale, spinach, cabbage and more. Antiviral herbs actually work to “inhibit the development of viruses.” Top ranking antiviral herbs include elderberry, Echinacea, garlic, ginger, calendula, licorice root, and oregano.
“…garlic had the highest antioxidant activity (19.4) followed by kale (17.7), spinach (12.6), alfalfa sprouts, broccoli flowers, beets, red bell pepper, eggplant (9.8-3.9) cauliflower, potato, sweet potato, cabbage, leaf lettuce, string bean, carrot, yellow squash, iceberg lettuce, celery, and cucumber (3.8-0.5).

8 Nourishing Ways
to Better
Liver Health
& a Cleaner Body
Zinc deficiency may alter immune responses in inflammatory liver diseases. The liver is the main organ responsible for the zinc metabolism which can be affected by liver diseases.
The liver and the bowel are the two most important organs in a detox diet. The liver works hard to neutralize the toxins that are circulating in your body. The bowel is the main way to get those nasty toxins out of your body.
Magnesium and zinc are the best minerals for flushing toxins from the cells of your body.
Magnesium stimulates cell activity so that toxins are released into the blood stream. Zinc is a strong antioxidant that works to destroy ‘free radicals’ in the body.
This is done by removing impurities from the blood in the liver, where toxins are processed for elimination. The body also eliminates toxins through the kidneys, intestines, lungs, lymphatic system, and skin. The liver uses oxygen and enzymes to burn toxins. This process is called oxidation, and makes the toxins more soluble in water. Making them more water soluble is necessary so they can be more easily excreted from the body by the kidneys or the liver.
Increasing number of liver disease cases are being linked to diets high in processed food and sedentary behavior.
Regularly consuming nutritious foods that reduce cholesterol and inflammation can restore liver function.
Studies show that NAFLD is reversible. Here are foods that can help prevent or reverse this liver disease.
Foods that promote liver health

Special Feature
If we want a clean body-- clean our blood.
The body makes around 2 million red blood cells per second.Clean blood begins in 7-10 days.
Our blood cells are made by our bones (marrow, stem cells, lymph, thymus, spleen) and replaced daily from food ingestion intake.
How is our blood cleaned?
What we intake – foods, drinks, absorb, smoke – it’s chemistry. Blood cells develop from stem cells in the bone marrow. Red blood cell replacement usually takes between 4 to 6 weeks.
How quickly will our body replace blood cells?
Mediterranean Plan
Veggies, fruit, 100% whole grains, and beans.
Use last week's cucumbers, greenleaf, tomatoes, apple.
