Marty's Message: Supporting Students

I am impressed by the great work happening in the College of Professional Studies in response to COVID-19. Faculty are busy transforming their courses in ways that ensure students will receive a high quality online learning experience. Check out the examples featured in this Monday Message.

Our advisers are awfully busy right now too, reassuring, supporting and advising students. Adviser Becky Konietzki reported that students seem to be doing pretty well given the circumstances, but some are faced with truly challenging situations. “Their hours have been cut, their kids are home, they don’t know when things will return to normal, they are hands-on learners attempting to do classes online, their sports seasons were canceled, etc."

Likewise, SGA Vice President Rayvn Knipple described the student challenges. “Not doing very well and stressed beyond belief–everything from food, filling out forms for unemployment and how to pay the rent; this could make or break a college education.

As a result, scholarship dollars are being raised and donations accepted for the Cupboard food pantry. This week, faculty and staff will join Carie Winn and Dr. Jason Siewert from the UWSP Counseling Center during this week’s CPS Coffee Hour via Zoom on the topic of Supporting Student Needs During COVID-19: Financial Considerations and Mental Health. I look forward to seeing the supports that result from these discussions.

As difficult as this time is for all of us, I am proud that we continue to prioritize the challenges and needs of our students first.
