The average student day looks very different at High Tech High than it does in traditional schools. In this email, students will talk about how their daily schedule has impacted their education. We will explore the reasons why a learning schedule within a school setting is so important and how you can incorporate student voice into its design. Finally we will charge course participants with designing a schedule for their ideal school. They will be shared with other course participants who will be asked to provide feedback.

Activity: Your Dream Day
|
|
Instructions
A dynamic school-day design can be the difference between a mediocre learning experience and a great one. In this next assignment, using Google documents or some other text editor, write a narrative of a typical student’s day in your dream school. Use “What High School Is” as your narrative model and then upload it to the peer review prompt so that your classmates can give you feedback on your school day design.
Your assignment is to create the "Dream" schedule. This can be broken down into hours, half-hour increments, or in a different organizational structure that makes sense to you. Try and limit yourself to a single page, and be aware of areas that may need explaining to someone who isn’t you, and explain them. It may be helpful to show your schedule to a friend or family member in order to get feedback on it before submitting.
Some questions to consider while creating your dream schedule:
- How many hours of schooling are there in a day?
- What are the educational values that you are trying to communicate within the structure of the schedule?
- What grade of student is this schedule for? Is it for all grades?
- How are you showing the balance of educational needs vs. holistic ones within your schedule?
Feedback (Optional)
Once you’ve completed the above task, have yourself or a peer review the above work and answer these questions:
- Did the course participant complete a schedule?
- Was the schedule long enough in length for you to feel confident about presenting the schedule to prospective students, parents, and the external community relevant to the school?
- What are some things you feel are strong about the submitted schedule?
- Was there anything in the submitted schedule that you would change in order to make the schedule more clear?
If you are asking a peer to help grade your assignment, please ask them to read this section:
Please provide kind, specific, and helpful feedback for your peer's work. Your feedback is pivotal in the process of this learner bettering their ability to reflect and interview. If you graded the learner a "no" on any of the answers above, please be sure to explain why and if there are any suggestions you have for improvement for their next draft of the assignment (if they’re planning on doing another pass). Try and use the following sentence for feedback: "What I like about this piece of artwork is [insert what you like]."
