A Note to our Squash Community

A huge part of our sport has always been about the connections, between players, in the leagues and at events, and in our larger local community. This newsletter is in part to check in and a shout out - we are going through some unusual times these days, and if anyone needs some help in any way, please reply back with an email.

If someone needs anything immediately, I know our community can help out - let me know and we'll set it up. For myself, I will be back in Kamloops soon (I'm still in Ontario visiting family), and in the meantime we can connect from a distance. I know there are many people working in groups, in person and though social media, to help those who need anything, and we can connect through those or just help directly as needed. If you or someone you know would like some help, please get in touch!

A gesture of support for local businesses:
Purchase gift card(s), donate to RCS and receive a tax receipt

If anyone would like to support their favourite local businesses at this time by purchasing a gift card or gift certificate from them, River City Squash can accept donations of gift cards and gift certificates and offer a tax receipt for the value of the card. In this way, the purchase of the gift card helps to support the local business and will also benefit a program for at-risk youth, and it comes with a tax receipt!

Tax receipts can be offered for any gift cards or gift certificates purchased from a business. In turn, River City Squash will use the donations to support the at-risk youth program, either by offering the items directly where needed, or by raffling them off in fundraisers at some later date in support of the program.

If you are interested, or have any questions or would like any information, please email dave@rivercitysquash.org or phone 250-314-9600.

The RCS after-school program suspended sessions when schools closed at spring break, and we are now exploring ways to help serve the kids and families in the community, while looking forward to once again running programs. We had switched to badminton (it's fun, who knew!) in place of squash this year, while working to help re-establish squash in town; before programming was suspended, we were planning sessions with new potential community partners, including the Kamloops Art Gallery, theatre sessions, food basics, and bringing in new sport opportunities. While the timeline is undetermined as yet, we are definitely looking forward to re-connecting with our students, schools, and community partners.

Some Resources

Some of us may be working full out these days, and others may be at home waiting for the chance to go back to work or school... There are many online activities available these days for those with some extra time on their hands or little ones to keep busy - here are some links to free options:

Audible Stories are free now, for as long as schools are closed:
https://stories.audible.com/start-listen

Open Culture has a list of free resources for students from K-12: http://www.openculture.com/free_k-12_educational_resources (and their main site has many links to free content for all ages)

School District 73 has lots of links here: https://www.sd73.bc.ca/en/community-parents-and-students/parent-resource-page.aspx

Yale University's "The Science of Well-Being" (apparently their most popular course ever) is available for free here: https://www.coursera.org/learn/the-science-of-well-being

From NPR, a list of free things: https://www.npr.org/2020/03/20/818670715/getting-bored-heres-a-list-of-free-things-that-werent-free-before-coronavirus

If you are interested in more links (there's lots available) or would like to share some, send an email!

And (of course) some squash links:

For practicing racquet skills indoors and at home, the HECS balls might be useful, they work with any kind of racquet and are non-marking on walls: https://www.hecsball.com/
I bought some for the kids' program, and wish I brought them to Ontario, although the wall of the parkade downstairs here works well enough to hit with a squash ball. They have a review on Squash Source here: https://www.squashsource.com/squash-at-home/.

Some PSA videos:
Top 10 women's rallies of the decade: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=laLPGZQJsIU

Top 10 men's rallies of the decade: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTcvGK3k1IQ

Squash BC on facebook has links to Squash Skills promos, Power/Elias matches every Saturday, and Squash Canada training webinars.

And World Squash Library has a varied selection of squash content at this link:
