 BCDC Staff Stories

Rosemary's Story
"I remember my first solo trip on the road with “Nancy” our mobile truck. To say I was driving cautiously would be an understatement especially when getting on and off the ferries. Driving a 34 foot pink truck does not make you inconspicuous. When Michaela and I arrived in Hoonah it was low tide, which meant having to place blocks under the tires to have enough clearance for the undercarriage to make it up a very steep ramp. We get to the top and the truck just didn’t want to make it over the last bit. There was a group of old men watching this process and weighing in. We heard several comments like that truck just doesn’t have enough power to she needs to floor it. By the time we made it to the parking lot we were laughing so hard our sides hurt because I was flooring it, I guess Nancy just wanted to dance a little that day."

Diana's Story
"With the permission of my mother in law, I would like to tell her story and why i am proud to work for BCDC.

One reason I am proud to work for BCDC is how quickly we can get patients in and help them with their worries.

November 15th, on a Friday, I was asking my mother in law how her annual doctor's appointment went. With a smile, she said: "I am past due for my mammogram."," that's what the doctor told her.

At the time, she was contemplating if she should schedule one or wait another year, due to her being busy at work.

I insisted she should schedule her appointment today since she was off. Working at BCDC, I knew we could "squeeze" her in on the same day.

I always question what would have happen if she had skipped the mammogram or waited a couple of months.

Long short story it's now March 23rd, 2020, and she is battling stage two of breast cancer, she is on her 2nd treatment of chemotherapy.

I always knew her as a strong woman, but ever since she found out she has cancer she is stronger than ever, with support from her family, friends, and the Fairbanks community.

If she decided to skip her appointment, this could have been missed and way worse of the situation. BCDC has done its mission, early detection."

Michala's Story
"We travel a lot during the summer for our mobile mammogram season bringing mammos to places that don’t have regular access. Myself and one of our techs had already gone through so many mishaps during this trip with our generator not working and the machine malfunctioning but after many hours we finally got our truck up and running in Metlakatla, AK. We were able to do patients starting at 10pm! We had ladies pull up lawn chairs and they brought hot chocolate, coffee, and snacks. We were all cracking jokes and telling stories and doing mammograms until midnight on a Saturday! I was so grateful that the patients would actually take time out of their weekend to do this, and they took it even further by treating us like we were family. It really shows how much we are appreciated and how important it is for us to get out there. Despite all the trouble we had, it was the most fun I’ve had on a trip and it really was the patients who made it all worth it!

We want to be able to keep making memories and having stories like this to tell so PLEASE, we URGE you to stay home in this time of crisis so we can all be healthy and ready once we are back to doing mammograms!"
