Registration open: Deep-Dive PIC Design Course

The annual JePPIX Deep-Dive PIC Design Course will run from 26 October to 6 November at Eindhoven University of Technology, the Netherlands. Registrations are now open! Take a look at the course description here. Early bird fee is valid until July 17, so register now!

Join our experts in this course and learn all about the theory and practice of integrated photonic component and circuit design using the powerful JePPIX building blocks. The course provides hands on training in the TU/e measurement labs, a tour and hands on work in the cleanroom and sessions with JePPIX software partners to get a head start in designing your own PICs.

Looking to design your first MPW chips? This course will give you a kick start on your way to your first design!

New building blocks by Fraunhofer HHI

Fraunhofer HHI developed two new building blocks: Sampled Gratings and Sampled Grating DBR laser. These building blocks will be available through the JePPIX platform.

Sampled gratings (SG) contain repeated gratings and waveguides to generate a reflection spectrum of equalized peak spacing. It is an important building block for the SG DBR laser to use the Vernier effect.

The sampled grating DBR laser is a widely tunable laser, which used the Vernier effect to select wavelength. Fraunhofer HHI designed peak spacings of front and rear SG gratings as 5 nm and 4.5 nm to extend wavelength tuning with high side mode suppression (SMSR). For narrow optical linewidth, we use platinum heaters for thermal tuning on top of the SG DBR- and phase sections to tune the SG DBR reflection spectrum and the longitudinal mode spacing of the laser cavity. The laser show 53 nm tuning range in C band from 1533 nm to 1586 nm with 40 dB SMSR. The optical linewidth amounts to 713 kHz of 3 dB homodyne method.

PIConnect: easy PIC evaluation

Technical Note

Our partner Fraunhofer HHI has developed PIConnect: a new PIC evaluation setup with integrated laser drivers, current and voltage sources. This evaluation setup simplifies the handling and characterization of PICs and lowers financial investment at an exploration stage.
PIConnect will become available as an additional offer to Fraunhofer HHI's InP technology platform. Read more about PIConnect in this technical note.

Revisit OFC2020 online

Enjoyed OFC2020? Or were you unable to attend? Take a look at the online video library and relive some of the presentations. You can watch talks from several of our partners as well. Check the interviews with Martin Schell from Fraunhofer HHI, Chris Maloney from VPIphotonics, Jesper Bek from Mellanox, Meint Smit from TU/e, and take a look at several of the plenary talks.

Growing interest in PIC technology says Michael Lebby

Michael Lebby, CEO of Lightwave Logic, shares his excitement at PhotonicsWest2020 about the six pilot lines supported by the European Commission. His role is helping the pilot lines become self-sustainable and commercial. In this role, he has noticed a growing interest in Europe in integrated photonics technology, which is really exciting. EPIC has been a great support in achieving an increasing interest in photonics and the pilot lines, and we as JePPIX are excited to be part of this ecosystem with our own pilot line activities!

Lumerical acquired by Ansys

Ansys, provider of engineering simulation software, and JePPIX partner Lumerical have signed an agreement on the acquisition of Lumerical. Ansys already has an established portfolio of simulation software for semiconductors and high-performance electronics. The acquisition of Lumerical extends Ansys' capabilities with simulation software for photonics.
"On April 1st Lumerical was officially acquired by Ansys. Lumerical values JePPIX and our relationship together. We look forward to our continued participation.”
- Todd Kleckner, Director

The joint press release can be read here, and more information including a FAQ on the acquisition can be found here.
