a bit of homeschooling encouragement, from our family to yours

Move Those Eggs Around
by Reginald Bullard

Invest in seven ventures, yes, in eight;
    you do not know what disaster may come upon the land.
Ecclesiastes 11:2, NIV

As home educators, we constantly seek to expose our kids to multiple languages, multiple activities, and multiple opportunities. We are challenged to diversify their homeschooling experience in the name of helping them identify their interests. In truth, whether personal or professional, whether young or not-so-young, there is great value in not putting all of your eggs in one basket. Personally, I always looked at investing in multiple opportunities as a good way to secure a good lifestyle and possibly accelerate early retirement.  All of us have known peers who had a side business or invested in a variety of ventures.

It seems as if our world has literally changed overnight with the pandemic.  We have seen many individuals who were doing well one minute and in an instant, they are unemployed. I was watching our Bible study recently on finances and heard our Associate Pastor refer to the words of Solomon in discussing investments. I immediately felt convicted that it wasn’t a financial guru, but God’s Word that reinforced this principle of diversification.
There is good news though: it’s never too late to keep your options open to diversify.  Could it be delivering for an app-based company or maybe working at home using your own computer? I am so proud of my wife, also known as “my best friend of many years.”  Aside from being a writer, business owner and speaker, she decided to pursue certification as a master gardener.  This started as a volunteer opportunity at a community-based garden and then evolved into her gaining her certification. Aside from gaining knowledge, God has allowed us to receive an overabundance of plants to bless others and to possibly sell in the future.

Even if you don’t want to diversify in totally separate ventures, are there opportunities within your field that could help you mitigate a disaster?  As another personal example, our son is a professional dancer for a ballet company, but he also choreographs for other studios and even acted (albeit briefly) in a film this year. My prayer is that you ask God during this time to lead you into other ventures that allow the words of Solomon to come alive in your life.

A word about The Rumble Hunters from Amazon.com: "For the courageous Rumble Hunters, the things that go bump in the night don't stand a chance! When James, their fearless leader, hears a curious rumble in the middle of the night, he embarks upon a late-night mission to "hunt that sound." Along the way, he gathers a heroic band to aid in his quest. It's hard to know who or what will be found, but one thing's for sure -- there's fun to be had on this rip-roaring adventure." Your elementary-aged student will surely enjoy this treasure.
