A40 London Road Corridor Improvements Project

Bulletin #013 - 06/04/20

www.buckscc.gov.uk/A40LondonRoad
PROJECT UPDATE

These are extraordinary times for everyone and to ensure the safety of our workforce and keep the road operating during the COVID-19 response we have taken the decision to pause the main construction programme.
A40 London Road Corridor Improvements Project
National Productivity Investment Fund

The project seeks to improve journey time reliability and ease congestion on the A40 London Road through the delivery of a range of improvements including junction changes, introduction of new traffic management technology, bus stop improvements and the optimisation of bus lane locations.

This phase of works is focusing on junction construction and builds on the work already completed to date including  improvements already made including new CCTV, refurbishment of all signalised pedestrian crossings, variable message signs and queue detection sensors. The stretch from Easton Street to Loudwater includes junction improvements at the Gordon Road, Hatters Lane, Micklefield Road with Ryemead Way and Gomm Road junctions.  When all works are fully completed, it will mean better and more reliable journeys for all who use this key route in and out of the town centre.
Recent Works

Hatter's Lane roundabout

Work to widen London Road near Hatter’s Lane roundabout has been continuing over the recent weeks. Since the last bulletin update, the following works have been carried out:
  • New kerbs installed for the realigned carriageway;
  • Earthworks completed in the southern verge for the creation of new the footway;
  • Drainage gullies installed;
  • New communication ducting laid;
  • Ongoing utility diversions works;
  • Night time road closure of London Road for surfacing works to the east of the roundabout, and day time surfacing works to the west of the roundabout. The existing road surface was removed and base layers of the newly widened carriageway were laid. A final surface course to tie-in the new and existing area of the road was the laid.
  • Fresh line markings have been installed on the new surfacing. Please note this work has not all been completed, and the existing line markings in the area will also be refreshed once work resumes.
Construction has been continuing at the Hatter's Lane junction during the Covid-19 period, and work is substantially complete. However, due to difficulties with resources, material supplies and to ensure the safety of the workforce, construction has now been paused. The site has been left safe and the road is fully open, with the only traffic management around two unfinished traffic islands. The southern footway remains closed so please follow the pedestrian diversion route which is in place.

Remaining work to be completed when construction resumes include:
  • Construction of new traffic islands at the roundabout;
  • Final surfacing of the new southern footway;
  • A small amount of carriageway surfacing work;
  • Further line marking in the area;
  • Earthworks to restore the southern verge.
  Micklefield Road/ Ryemead Way/ Cock Lane/ London Road junction

Since the last update, construction in this area focused on realigning the kerbs to widen the north side of London Road on the west side of the junction. Work to relocate a utility chamber on the south side of the road has also been completed ahead of future carriageway widening. Work was paused at this location in order to reallocate all available resources to the Hatter’s Lane site. There is a small area of widened carriageway on the north side of London Road which has been reinstated will temporary material. This will be monitored until final reinstatement can be undertaken when work resumes.
