Spring 2020 Newsletter

The 2020 award winners celebrate their award with the OWSD and Elsevier Foundation teams.
"The words of Dr. Susana Arrechea express the mission of the Elsevier Foundation better than anything, “Winning the OWSD-Elsevier Foundation Award means showing to my baby daughter and to other young Guatemalans that scientific research can be done and recognized worldwide regardless of gender, origin of birth, or where you grew up.” Whether we are supporting awards for women scientists, a medical day for MSF/Epicentre, an African nursing app or health accelerator, our goal is inclusive research and health. Read more to find out about the amazing work our partners are doing. We are proud to support them."
Ylann Schemm, Elsevier Foundation Director

Launching the Jibu app
|
March featured the launch of an important mobile learning project that we have been supporting for the past four years: the Jibu app. Developed by Amref Health Africa in collaboration with our Foundation and the Dioraphte Foundations, Jibu (Swahili for “answer”) allows for self-paced, self-administered learning and is aimed at improving the skills and knowledge of health workers in sub-Saharan Africa. Many developing countries suffer from acute shortages, skills-mix imbalances, retention, motivation and limited access to education and training. Jibu provides an innovative approach to distance learning to allow for the upskilling of health workers across Sub-Saharan Africa through m-learning.
