How to Write a Good Book
Thursday, April 16th & 23rd, 6:00-7:15pm
Join URL: https://nyu.zoom.us/j/432956928
Meeting ID: 432-956-928
The final two workshops in the Writing Matters series will examine how to combine sentences, paragraphs, and chapters into a book, with a special emphasis on organization and argumentation. Too many books seem to lose their way, become repetitive, offer extraneous material, and fail to come to a satisfying conclusion. To help avoid that, this session will stress the importance of an animating idea that conveys a book’s main point while also serving as its organizing principle. We will also talk about bridges between chapters, how to move effectively from one section to the next, and the proper place of prologues, introductions, and conclusions.

GSAS will be offering four language courses for reading knowledge this summer. These courses are designed to give you the skills necessary to conduct research in French, German, Italian, or Spanish. They will focus on reading knowledge of the language only. No prior knowledge of the language is required. Classes will be conducted in English and the readings will be tailored toward individual student research needs.
Courses will be held during the first summer session from Tuesday, May 26th, 2020 to Thursday, July 2nd, 2020 and will meet three times a week for two hours per course meeting. If you wish to participate in this program, you must commit to attending ALL course meetings. The course will appear on your transcript, will carry zero credit, and will be graded on a pass/fail basis.
Enrollment in these courses is through an application process (deadline: April 24th). For more information and to apply, click here.

MLA Statement on COVID-19 and Academic Labor
Comp Lit faculty, graduate students, and the GSAS administration are currently in dialogue on optimal ways to deal with issues of concern arising from the COVID crisis. We are fully aware of strains on conditions of life that affect financial security, teaching, time-to-degree, general stress and mental health issues and much more. As we work to develop ways to respond as quickly as possible we are taking under advisement the MLA's strong statement on academic labor practices, which you can find here.

CAS Proud to Be First Faculty Connect Program now accepting applications!
Proud to Be First’s Faculty Connect program facilitates the development of meaningful academic, research and pre-professional connections between second-year, first-generation students and NYU faculty. This year, we invite faculty and students to consider, in particular, how research can shape their academic, co-curricular, and pre-professional journeys here at CAS and beyond.
It is our pleasure to invite you to participate in Faculty Connect for the 2020-2021 academic year. The time commitment is about three hours over the fall semester: a one-hour meeting in the faculty member’s office in the first half of the semester (funds for coffee and pastries provided by Proud to Be First), and lunch at NYU’s Torch Club in the second half of the semester (also courtesy of Proud to Be First). We are going into the third great year of this vibrant program and hope you are interested in joining us for 2020-2021!
Please complete this form by Sunday, August 16, 2020 if you would like to participate in Faculty Connect for 2020-2021.
