Special Issue: Virtual Roundup

Dear <<First Name (Required)>>,

All of us at USJETAA hope you and your families are staying safe and healthy during this different time. With dramatic changes to our daily lives, many people are looking for new ways to stay connected to each other and to their communities. To help you stay connected during this period of adjustment, we have prepared a special round up of virtual events and activities.

Over the past few years, USJETAA has been committed to providing virtual content through our webinar series and other online video programs. In light of the current crisis, we are offering more frequent webinars over the next few months. Our special webinar on Monday will deal with working during COVID, and will have information for both those adapting to working from home and others who are laid off or furloughed. We have also compiled a list of our other upcoming webinars, virtual events hosted by the JETAA chapters, and Japan related activities and classes you can access from the comfort of you own home. In our regular monthly emails we will begin including these types of virtual events and activities so that you can continue to stay connected.

Warmly,

Bahia Simons-Lane

VISUALIZING JAPAN (1850S-1930s): WESTERNIZATION, PROTEST, MODERNITY

This MITx course was developed in collaboration with HarvardX and is co-taught by MIT, Harvard, and Duke historians. You will examine Japanese history in a new way—through the images created by those who were there—and the skills and questions involved in reading history through images in the digital format. The introductory module considers methodologies historians use to “visualize” the past, followed by three modules that explore the themes of Westernization, in Commodore Perry’s 1853-54 expedition to Japan; social protest, in Tokyo’s 1905 Hibiya Riot; and modernity, as seen in the archives of the major Japanese cosmetics company, Shiseido.
