Coronavirus Crisis - keep our fishermen fishing

An update from Cornwall Good Seafood Guide - April 2020

Dear <<First Name>>

I hope you are well and are keeping safe during these unprecedented times?

With recent panic buying in our supermarkets and increasing restriction on travel around the country many people haven't paused to think about what the Coronavirus outbreak means for our small scale inshore, sustainable fishermen.  Virtually overnight at the start of the pandemic the market for seafood dropped out as restaurants were forced to close and as export markets also closed down. Many fishers have been forced to stop fishing facing financial ruin and potentially months without income, however a growing number are carrying on and supplying direct to the public or to local merchants.

Although this is a time of unprecedented hardship for many one positive aspect is that many local people have reconnected with our fishermen and are once again eating local. We have an incredible resource of sustainable healthy local seafood and we think its is vital that local people eat it and keep Cornwall fishing.

As the lockdown kicked in and we learned of the markets collapsing we set up a page on the Cornwall Good seafood Guide website that provides contact details of businesses and fishers all across the county who are offering sales and delivery's of seafood.
Please share this link to our page.

Keep checking the list as it is growing as fishermen and companies provide new services.

Wherever you are, in the county or outside of Cornwall you are still able to access fantastic quality Cornish seafood as there are numerous companies offering nationwide delivery. Including our supporters The Cornish Fishmonger and Fish For Thought - both are offering free national delivery!  There are many more initiatives listed on our page that help you get your seafood fix!

Our thoughts go out to all of the amazing seafood restaurants, hotels and pubs that support us and that have been forced to close during the lockdown. We hope you all weather the storm, keep safe and are back up and running as soon as possible.

Don't forget that our website is packed with information to help you enjoy Cornish seafood including a how to section with videos and instruction to make prepping your seafood easy.
We have loads of great recipes to suit all tastes and time restraints!
We also have a 'meet the fishermen' section where you can learn direct from the fishermen why we should be supporting them!

Very importantly you can also read up on the history of Cornwall's fishing and learn about current issues of sustainability - Its a complex subject that we help you navigate and we provided much needed advice on what is recommended as the most sustainable and therefore best choices for you to make to benefit future fishermen and the wider environment!

Enjoy!

Keep safe and keep on supporting our sustainable fishermen!

Our vision - to see a future where productive fisheries co-exist with healthy seas. To achieve this we spread good news and help people make good seafood choices.  We want to help local people reconnect with the Cornish fishing industry and encourage them to eat sustainable Cornish seafood regularly.
The Cornwall Good Seafood Guide rating of seafood sustainability is underpinned by the Marine Conservation Society Good Fish Guide, Who we work closely with to ensure that all of Cornwall's fisheries are represented and all available local infomation is taken into account when scoring.

Cornwall Good Seafood Guide was established with the help of European Fisheries fund, the MMO and Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Fisheries Local Action Group.  We are currently funded by European Maritime and Fisheries fund, by contributions from our Business Supporters scheme and the Fishmongers' Company.
