Changing Times Ahead

As we are all getting used to the new normal of life in lockdown, we are having to make adjustments and we are all finding different ways of doing things. At the start of the year we planned a full calendar of regional events and we were in the process of pulling plans together when the Coronavirus struck. For now most events are on hold, and we will resume planning once restrictions are eased.

In the meantime, though, we are looking to fill the void by increasing our output of webinars on our BrightTalk channel. Webinars have been popular with our members and we have seen a steadily rising number of viewings over the last year. They seem to be particularly popular in catch up mode, and we see that most webinars are viewed within 10 days of live transmission. As events are being cancelled we are also seeing a good range of speakers offering to do webinars for us, which is great. I encourage you to take a look and sign up for anything that takes your interest.

We have two CDMP bootcamps planned for later in the year. The first will be in Birmingham on 1st & 2nd September and the second will be in Liverpool on 4th & 5th November. We are hoping that the current restrictions will be lifted in time for these events to go ahead. If for any reason we have to postpone these events registration fees will be transferrable to the later sessions when they are re-planned. Full details for the bootcamps are available on our website.

DAMA UK MENTORING SCHEME:  UPDATE & REQUEST

DAMA UK’s mentoring scheme was launched in 2011 with the objective of providing a mentoring service open to all DAMA UK members.  The scheme uses the University of Southern California’s definition of mentoring as ‘a developmental partnership through which one person shares knowledge, skills, information and perspective to foster the personal and professional growth of someone else’

The scheme’s main aims are to:
  • Help improve the skills and expertise of all DAMA UK members by growing skills, expertise and best practice across the organisation.
  • Support the professionalism of all DAMA UK members
  • Raise the profile of data management specialists across wider UK industry
In the last nine years more than 50 DAMA UK members have been connected to a variety of mentors who have provided support across the entire breadth of the data management disciplines including data architecture, business intelligence, data quality and data governance.

In recent months it has become increasingly evident that despite its successes the scheme needs a radical overhaul.  At present connecting mentors and mentees is predominantly a manual process, relying on emails and forms to establish connections.   Moreover the administration of the scheme has been difficult as it depends on voluntary part time individuals to manage the process.  As a result there have been delays and errors in dealing with requests, especially at times when the demands of day jobs have predominated.

The DAMA UK Committee has therefore initiated a project to create a new mentoring process which enables potential mentors and mentees to connect more easily via the DAMA UK website.  This project is underway and a new process will be delivered later this year.  We will update you when the updated scheme is live.

In the meantime, if you have applied for mentorship in recent months and have not heard back from DAMA UK please accept our sincere apologies.   As an interim step prior to the launch of the new scheme, could you please email Nigel Turner directly (DAMA UK Committee Member) at nigel.turner@globaldatastrategy.com if you are in this position and have not been connected to a mentor.   If you have already completed a mentoring request form please attach that to the email.

If you are interested on the mentoring scheme and want to apply please email Nigel as above.  You can obtain a copy of the mentoring request form via the DAMA UK website mentoring page at https://www.dama-uk.org/DAMA-UK-Mentoring-Scheme The form is at Appendix 1 of the DAMA UK Mentoring Handbook.  You can also view a webinar on the scheme if you want to know more about it.
