What does a choir sound like in a pandemic?
That's the question we've been trying to answer since we suspended our rehearsals on March 16! There's no easy answer. Latency and internet lag mean there's no such thing as singing together in real time over the internet. (Here's a great example of how it doesn't work!) We all miss singing together so much! But here are some of the ways our creative and resourceful artistic team has been keeping the music going:
- Tamariki, our littlest choir for ages 5-9, has been convening on Google Classroom to learn songs and play music games together
- Kikimasu, our auditioned treble choir for ages 9-12, has been having some Google Hangouts and learning from instructional videos posted by their conductor
- Shumayela, our youngest youth choir for ages 12-16, is also on Google Classroom and busily doing assignments about everything from world music, to music in TV, to learning about composers
- Kokopelli, our flagship youth choir for ages 14-24, has been having regular Zoom chats -- some purely social, and others centered around a musical activity
- Òran, Vacilando, and ChandraTala (our adult choirs) have been having regular Zoom hangouts as well as great discussions on Facebook about great choir performances, musical childhoods, and other things that connect us (like cats, puzzles, and baking...)
We are so thankful for creative leadership and amazing technology to keep us connected, but we know that the day we get to gather again and make music together, we will be even more thankful for the power of voices raised as one!

Open rehearsals and auditions!
While we’re waiting for the world to re-boot, we’re thinking of innovative ways to host our open rehearsals and auditions this year!
This might be your opportunity to do a Q & A with a conductor or talk to a couple of choristers about what choir is like, why it has meaning for them and how it shapes their week. And we’re excited about the possibility of online auditions too.

In recognition of your contributions and to celebrate National Volunteer Week (April 19-25, 2020) we say thank you to those of you who have devoted time and energy to the Kokopelli Choir Association over the past 24 years! We applaud YOU for taking the time to help us create meaningful moments for our choristers and audiences.
Whether you’ve stuffed envelopes, sized uniforms, filed music, helped at concerts, been a board member, chaperoned, have been a lead parent, photocopied, done pick ups and deliveries, or any of the myriad of other volunteer jobs, we know that volunteers are an essential resource to our organization. We are so pleased that you’ve given time to this community!
We often say this at the time, but we want to take this special opportunity, to send a sincere “thank you”!
