Hello fellow Soroptimist!

I hope everyone is doing well! It kind of feels we are adapting to our new normal.
I specially want to thank my fellow club members for embracing a new way of club life and not just trying, but mastering the online meeting challenges.

SIBR's delegates, Linda Lucena (President-elect), Angie Little (Past President/Membership chair) and I have send in our ballots for the SNR Regional board 2020-2022 and the new Board of Directors has been announced!!

Congratulations to our very own Lisa Fitzgerald, Governor-elect and Sheron Box, SNR Treasurer!

And hopefully we will get to celebrate everyone sometime in July at a possible SNR/SDR conference. Stay tuned for more information for that.

Some of you may have heard that the SIA conference that was planned for July in Bellevue, Washington has been canceled as well. I was looking forward meeting Soroptimist Sisters from all over and bringing back new ideas to the club, but the safety and the well being of all is most important.

As many other clubs, SIBR has decided to postpone our 25th Micobrew Fest celebration to next year!
In order to bring in some extra revenues we have put together an online Tshirt Store. We created inspirational Tees and will change and add to the store.
Take a look, if you haven't already.
https://www.bonfire.com/store/sibr-store/

During this Month I like to keep up with the virtual meeting in order to stay in touch with the club! I am hoping that we are able to have a final "End of the year" party by the end of June, maybe July. After all we always have a lot to celebrate!

Until then.......
Take care, stay safe and be well

With much appreciation Babette

We're in This Together

Dear Soroptimist Members,

In this turbulent time of the COVID-19 global pandemic, my thoughts go out to all of you. First and foremost, I hope you and your family are safe and well.

The challenges our world is facing are unprecedented as COVID-19 wreaks havoc on life as we know it.  Many of us are experiencing health concerns, isolation, challenges with food, medical help and supplies, and financial losses. We must listen to the advice of experts who tell us to take things one day at a time and focus on minimizing our stress.

We also know our organization is experiencing many fast-moving changes as well. Your Soroptimist club is not meeting. Your well-planned event to raise funds—canceled. Your region conference—canceled. Club and region leaders are working hard to minimize financial losses.

And, of course, we all worry about the women and girls who continue to need our help. In fact, they need us now more than ever. Because we serve a vulnerable population, we know this crisis will affect them disproportionately. We also know that domestic violence increases during times of crisis, which will put many women and girls at further risk. While we may not be able to physically support the women and girls, there are steps our clubs and members can take, which I will outline below.

Our organization is facing steep challenges as well. Your Board of Directors and headquarters staff are making strategic choices to minimize lost revenue and adjust our budget to ensure we can deliver our programs and services to you, and follow the new laws being ordered federally, state-wide and at the local level. To keep SIA operational, all staff have been set up to work remotely.

We strongly believe it is critical we take care of you—our members and clubs—so you can continue to directly support the women and girls who need your help.

Here is how we plan to help you:

  1. Our federation Board has rescinded its decision to increase dues $2.00 in Club Year 2020-2021.
  2. Our federation Board has expanded the definition of disaster funds to be used to:
    1. defray federation and SI dues for clubs and members
    2. defray fees such as general liability for clubs in Canada and the USA
    3. defray unbudgeted expenses incurred by SIA headquarters to stay in compliance with federal, state and local laws.

We are certain the need for help will far exceed what is available in our Disaster Fund. That is why we are asking you to make a contribution to the Disaster Fund if you are in a financial situation to do so.  Your gift will go a long way toward providing support and continuing our mission during this time of crisis.

Here is how you can help:

  • Please keep yourselves safe and healthy by practicing physical distancing and keeping your spirits high.
  • Contribute to the SIA Disaster Fund right now if you are able. These emergency funds will help you—our clubs and members—support the women and girls who rely on you, and SIA headquarters.
  • Reconnect with your club members and continue to help women and girls virtually. Consult this resource developed by headquarters’ program department for ideas.

Let’s use this time as we pause in our normal routines, to plan and prepare for the future. Together we can keep all of Soroptimist strong and serve the vulnerable population of women and girls well into our second century. I have no doubt … we will get through this. And we will get back to making dreams come true.

Thank you for being a Soroptimist. Thank you for being a good world citizen. And thank you for keeping the women and girls we serve in your hearts. Be well. Stay safe.

In Soroptimist Friendship,

Tina Wei-Kang Pan
2019-2020 SIA President

P.S. Your gift in any amount to the Disaster Fund will go a long way toward addressing our challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. We ask that you please make your gift by April 30 so we can work towards addressing the needs of our clubs and members.

P.P.S. If you or your club need support we will be providing further information in the upcoming weeks—outlining how your club can apply for assistance through our Disaster Fund.

Human Trafficking Committee: Chair: Linda Lucena
Sally Mendez, Sarah Fry and Quinn Mendez

Back in January we had an information booth at the Saturday Farmer's Market. This was a team effort to bring awareness of sex trafficking to the Chico area. Prior to the event
Sally went on KPAY Radio the spread the word. At the event we had informative poster
boards with info on
1. Recognizing the signs of HT  and
2. Prevention. We had the PROTECT Cards to hand out along with blue lapel ribbons.
We also offered brochures on SI Bidwell Rancho. Our committee was  joined by Babette, Celeste, Carol and Lisa.

We are still supporting HT victims that come in contact with the Forensic RNs at Enloe
Medical Center. Recently, we donated 4 replacement backpacks for  victims. Inside is a new change of clothing, toiletries, snack and reusable water bottle. I
also include a note with an inspiring quote.
From our contact at Enloe: "Thank you for the backpacks. It means the world to
our CSEC kids to have new clothes and cute new backpacks, and especially to
know the community cares about them!"

Those are words to keep us going!

Fair View Committee: Chair: Judi Merlo
Susan Bandstra, Melanie Austen and Cathy Gurney

Here is a wrap up of the activity for Fair View High School for this club year.  So far our budget of $5000 this year has been allocated to $1500 for a scholarship and $2250 for bus passes.  Normally we would spend the remainder on graduation gifts and assistance with caps and gowns, but that has changed.  After communication with the Office Manager and Principal regarding their priorities, the Committee has decided to hold back on the graduation expenses and keep the remainder of the budget for additional bus passes for the next school year.  The graduation ceremony itself is up in the air, so we think this is the best use of those funds, since our budget for next year is questionable.  The intent of all concerned is to get students to school so that they CAN graduate at some point.

Meet Della Miller, Event Manager at American Vacuum Society (AVS)

Last year, I celebrated my 20th Anniversary as the Marketing Communications/Events Manager at the American Vacuum Society (AVS). In case you were curious I do not sell vacuum cleaners—I plan conferences throughout the world for physicists who are doing research that requires vacuum equipment to remove matter or particles. They explore material, surfaces, and interfaces that are applicable from everything to how a prosthetic leg might wear to making the chips in you cell phones as tiny and as fast as possible. The same year I joined AVS, I married Jason Race, my high school sweetheart (after 11 years of dating) and just a few years later we welcomed our daughter Laken.

Laken (18) is graduating from PV High School in June and is headed to either UC Irvine or UCLA’s School of Nursing. For the past 12+ years, we have enjoyed watching her dance competitively. When I am not traveling for work or spending time at dance competitions, I enjoy being home and working in my yard and summer floats in the pool. We love pets and have had house full over the years. We still have a pug named Napoleon and a Chinese Water Dragon called BobZilla. We have unofficially "adopted" the neighbor's cat as well, but to keep that low key we just refer to her as Kitty.

I joined Soroptomist just a few years ago after reading a Facebook post from Sarah Fry. Sarah and I were at Chico State together and I was interested in reconnecting and looking to volunteer and to meet new people. Since joining, I have participated in several events and have served on the Focus and Fundraising Committees. I have met many great women who are a passionate about helping other women and children. I look forward to serving in other capacities (as work travel permits) and sharing more comradery with these enthusiastic volunteer while improving lives.
